Calling this a trail is a bit of a stretch, as it is a fully paved and well maintained walk. But even if you're a "hiker," don't let this discourage you. The views are still really beautiful and I saw plenty of elk along the trail, minding their business and going about their day.
The best part about this trail is the educational element of it. Each step you take along the trail corresponds to a certain amount of time in the geological record, and at various points along the trail there will be signs with detailed explanations as to what was happening in the area at this time, what level of the sedimentary rock this corresponds to, how those rocks formed, and where you could see the rocks from that era in the canyon right in front of you. Read moreTrail of Time on the Grand Canyon South Rim takes you through 2 billion years of geological history in something less than a mile. Medallions mark varying time periods, with time intervals getting longer further back in history. Smaller markers in between have a penny, dime, or other coin. The signage provides nice information that connects with the landscape in view. Especially nice are the sample rock samples with polished faces. The trail is wheelchair accessible and paved the entire way. Sometimes the trail has a parallel trail getting walkers closer to the edge of the rim.
