I love that someone in Gadsden realized the historical importance of our vintage theaters. I stepped through the doors to see a live performance of The Color Purple, and I was transported back in time to the Lake Theater, now long gone. That was where I saw Gone With The Wind, Mary Poppins and Blazin'Saddles as first runs. I was confused that we couldn't sit up in the balcony, it seemed like the best seats by far. But only black people could sit there. And only they got to drink from the old ornate porcelain water fountain. We had to drink from the generic new metal one. It was many years before I realized what segregation and bigotry were, and the shame I felt remembering all the times I got preferential treatment (even if it didn't feel like it sometimes) because of my skin color that I didn't get to choose. The Color Purple was the perfect show to see there. I looked carefully at those winding stairs that to me are a symbol and reminder to never let history repeat itself.
Sorry. Got carried away. But that's what a venue like this is meant to be.
One star lost because whoever was responsible for sound did not balance well. The music drowned out voices most of the time. And the many violent screeches almost forced me to leave. I did see some leaving because of the sound issues. The people in front of me were disappointed. They had come for a 2nd performance, hoping to hear better this time.
Kudos to all the...
Read morePublic event venue located in Alabama City. Part of the restoration oh historic Alabama City. The building was the old Ritz Theater where many of the generation before me watched black and white motion pictures on Saturday afternoon for ten cents. From what my Mom would describe that four to six blocks of Alabama City would have the side- walks full of people going about their business and entertainment. If I am not mistaken highway 431 (Meighan Blvd) was no more than a two lane US highway through the city. I have seen multiple events at this location and have never been disappointed. The ambiance a history 9f the site seems to simply make the good things better. The theater group is surprising talented and have performed above expectations in production's as good as any in our five state region. Also saw a production of Annie by Episcopal Day School that could easily be the best show I have seen by children eighth grade younger. I would have no problem recommending the location to ant of people I know from across the southern states all the way to...
Read moreStill thinking about the show my daughters and I attended yesterday, The Adventures of Huck Finn. This was our second time here, the first time was saw Quilters and were so impressed we had to come back. Everything was superb. The music and play, the venue, the prices and even the Gazebo across the road (great place for photos). Now for the cast . They are all absolutely outstanding. Jim (the slave) had a voice that sent cold chills down my spine. The boat scene brought tears to my eyes. It was so very well portrayed. All the actors/actresses deserve an honorable mention. The hard work, dedication and time spent practicing was very obvious. I can't...
