The views are stunning along the 2 mile trail to get there. And once you get there the falls are absolutely amazing and the water is blissfully ice cold to soak you feet in while you enjoy the falls.
I had to say that first so you knew that it is so worth the hike. And oh what a hike it is! It is only a little over 2 miles. But you climb hundreds of feet in elevation while doing it. Make sure you bring good hiking shoes and a walking stick on this one, because it's a doozie. This isn't one of those leisurely do in flip flops kind of trails. You will get blisters if you don't wear good footwear. It is mostly paved. But it was definitely done several decades ago. So slot of the blacktop is missing now. So it's not the most even trail. And like I said it is a stiff climb up the whole way. Make sure to bring plenty of water. And if your a bit out of shape like me take some breaks.
There are bears in the area. We saw a set of momma bear foraging. And her cubs sleeping in a tree. Probably 10-20 ft off the trail. So be cautious. But they seemed docile enough and used to people. But they are something to be ready for. But that's really anytime you go out into nature.
I don't want to disway anyone from doing the hike and seeing the falls. Far, far from it. I just want everyone to be correctly prepared for the journey that it is. It's not a hard trail if you take your time by any means. But it's not a flat walk in the park either. Your feet will definitely be warm when you get there. And they will love it when you soak them in the nice cold waters of the falls once you get there.
So do the hike, take it slow with water. And enjoy this beautiful...
Read moreThe Cataract Falls trail is a great trail for families with kids. We had a 1 year old in a carrier and a 2 year old walk on this trail. It's a pretty easy and relatively short trail with a pretty little waterfall at the end. A baby in a carrier was not overly tiring and our 2 year old was able to walk nearly all of the trail with hand holding. We saw many families on this trail and the waterfall makes for nice photos at the end. There are some wet, slippery rocks in some places, particularly near the waterfall, where we carried our 2 old but there was also a stretch of very shallow water where he was able to walk near the edge with supervision and get his shoes wet (which he loved). Near the waterfall there is a connection to a couple of longer and steeper trails. We walked this for about 10 minutes before turning back as it wasn't appropriate for very young children and it was getting close to naptime. Definitely recommended...
