We have never visited Gonzales, Texas, but had to visit for business reasons today. We decided to visit the Gonzales Memorial Museum because we wanted to learn more about the origin of the infamous "Come and Take It" motto in relation to Gonzales. There was a very nice and welcoming gentleman that helped us when we paid our museum fee. The museum is small and in two sections, but very well organized and detailed in information. We got to see the infamous cannon and its history, among other historical data regarding Gonzales' citizens who participated in Texas' Independence from Mexico. The museum honors the Immortal 32 - those who were from Gonzales who died at the Alamo. There were also artifacts from different time periods in Gonzales, too. Overall, a very nice museum - very clean and the grounds were well-taken care of, with the exception of the museum's reflecting pool which is undergoing renovations at this time. The outdoor amphitheater was a surprise to see and must be a nice gathering place for...

Great piece of History. A lot of wonderful historical items. Great stories and photos. Inside they have a few large rooms with lots of artifacts and items. Everything has great descriptions. A lot of personal items from local residents and a lot of items from the wars. There are restrooms available inside and it is air-conditioned. Nice memorials outside also. Yes, the real Gonzales cannon is inside the building. They allow you to take photos, there is a sign-in book, and small gift shop. If you visit here also check out the Gonzales Chamber of Commerce in the old County Jail building right down the street. Another great place with great artifacts and you can actually tour the old jail. A great place to bring kids to look at a piece of history that isn't always listed in the...

What a hard place to rate. If you were comparing to something like The Alamo itself it would score low. But this type of museum is really a category of its own. It captures the connection the small town of Gonzales has to its history and how deeply everyone there feels about that connection.

Is is well curated? Not in the least but it’s got things you can see no where else like the actual Come And Take It Cannon! Instead of learning something from well written plaques you have interesting conversations with people who are generationally connected to the history of Texas.

It is really a hidden gem in a otherworldly historical town. I definitely want to go back and see everything available.

The Historical value of everything in this museum is absolutely immeasurable. The whimsy that the items stir from the imagination in visioning people of generations past using the implements is so wonderful. The gentleman that was manning the office was extremely polite and accommodating of the way we wished to explore, which was by ourselves and at our own pace. If you have the time to go exploring and would like to take a glimpse into the life of an early Texas resident, and see the EXACT cannon that pushed Texans into fighting and sacrificing so that we can have the beautiful State we reside in today. Get by there and check it out. If you love history, you'll really appreciate this place.

We have wanted to visit Gonzalez for decades. WHY did we wait so long!?!? What a wonderful community, with a heroic heritage! Texas wouldn't have become the amazing Republic, and the proud, tenacious State that it is, without the selfless pioneers that gave everything they had, including their lives, to the dream of Freedom! The Museum and historic sites throughout the area bring the memory of those events to life. From the first shot of the "Come and Take It" cannon, to the volunteers riding to their deaths in defense of the Alamo, to the last shots fired by Gonzalez men at San Jacinto, Texas will forever be grateful to these HEROES!!!
