I have been playing Caledonia for over forty years. It has always been my favorite course, even with its not so good fairways. I have played it 100's of times. I played 5/25/19. I have never seen it so bad. There used to be someone out all the time weed wacking, watering, etc, but I haven't seen anyone doing any work to the course at all in a couple years. We have had a lot of rain, which might explain why the fairway roughs are so tall, but the main fairways are terrible. The grass is dis-appearing in an alarming fashion. Number 2 always had plenty of grass, even in the driest summers, but the grass is dieing, leaving massive bare spots all over. Number 6 was always bad with rocks and dead grass, but now the course is being used with almost no visable work being done. The cart paths were fixed half hearthedly in places, but still rough. Most of the fairways are roped off so you can't drive on them. These people are letting this course go, sucking all the money out of it they can, and not fixing it. Stay away. Go to Piney Apple, or the course up on top the ridge...
Read moreI played the back 9 only due to time. This place is amazing, and I cannot imagine there are many others like it. It's a forested course with a LOT of elevation changes, making for many interesting shots. I had to recon several shots as they are blind over hills. It's not your country club with the exact same fairways and first cuts everywhere, but I think that adds to the charm of it. I found the greens rolled true enough but were very slow - useful for some of the crazy approaches you may find yourself hitting, it was easy to stop the ball. This course would also be great in hot weather due to abundant shade and it's location in the mountains. It's really a beautiful location. Had a chance to talk to the owner Matt when done, a nice guy running a very unique operation. ...
Read moreI don't get out to golf a lot throughout the year, but I always enjoy Caledonia. For the intense heat and little rain we've gotten this year, the course is actually in really good shape. The par 5 Hole #2 will continue to live rent free in my head. I cannot get better than a bogey on that hole. But a few birdies and pars sprinkled in will always get me coming back. I liked it so much I played another 9, and shot 4 strokes better. Caledonia is challenging enough for good golfers, but also forgiving enough for newbies and the proverbial weekend hacker. I'd like to think I'm somewhere in between🤣. I leave a pictures of the ball marks I left on 9 and 17,...
