Absolutely perfect day weather wise for a kayak trip with my teen son. Dan was super layed back, such a nice guy and I just knew our day was gonna be great. Especially since we only had 1 other couple with us. The day was so easy, peaceful and exactly what I would have wished for. Dan let us do our thing, stayed nearby if we had questions but let us soak it all in. The silence was so peaceful. The sounds of nature just makes you feel like nothing bad is in the world. I could have kept going for another couple of hours. I didn't want it to end. I'd been wanting to do a trip like this for while and am so glad I did. There is a bonus... no mosquitoes! Dan had mentioned they cannot survive in those waters. I saw bees, little dragon flies (Dan told me the name but I forgot, something with a P) but no other flying insects. We saw a gator and turtles and different birds. One of the best parts was getting to enjoy the nature in such peacefulness thanks to having awesome, quiet guests to share the tour with. I'd say if you do this, be respectful of others if you have a large group. If it was a large loud group, I'd imagine the experience just wouldn't be the same. We were very lucky. Ps... the van ride to the kayaks is fun. A little added adventure. I'm so glad places like this...
Read moreWe love kayaking. My wife and I rented a double kayak and paid $10 extra dollars for the extra 1.5 hours. In total we were allowed 4 hours of time on the river and only paid $67. It was extremely cheap and good value. We put in at 10:30 and decided to go up river with the last 2 hours of the tide. We kayaked way upstream. By way upstream, in 1 hour 45 min we made it 5.5 miles, all the way to Dorchester State Park. Coming back down the river, we realized we over did it. But it never is a river trip if your not exhausted.
In all 11 miles round trip, around 3 hours 30 minutes on the water, and only 67 dollars. Easy peasy.
For future renters, the parking instructions were a bit confusing. Take the turn for Middleton Inn off Hwy 61. Tell the front office you have a kayak rental. Angle left towards the inn and park in the main parking lot by the Inn. Once you park, walk to the right past the Inn, along the river. The kayak rental is 500 ft down near the pool.
A little hard to find, but...
Read moreI have done two separate kayak trips with Luke of Charleston Kayak Company and couldn't be happier with both experiences!
We first did the sunset tour at Middleton Plantation and had so much fun on the water and learned so much. Luke shared information about the area, the history of the plantation, the wildlife, and so many other areas that it really made our kayak trip an amazing experience.
The second tour we did was about 6 months later, and we specifically searched through the selection of Charleston Kayak Company because we enjoyed the first so much. We chose the Blackwater Swamp Tour to do with some friends and family, and again were blown away by Luke's never ending knowledge and ability to answer all of our questions.
I definitely recommend Luke and Charleston Kayak Company for anyone, wether you have been kayaking before or not! Luke made us feel comfortable kayaking and gave us tips on how to...
