Lovers Leap Hannibal Missouri:
There's a beautiful view and a wonderful legend waiting for those that will take the time to drive up to it. Like the Mark Twain Lighthouse located not far from this site the drive up is very steep and the roadway is not much more then one vehicle wide. We unfortunately met someone coming down as we went up and had to squeeze uncomfortably close to an edge! Once at the top the view is amazing as you look down on the mighty Mississippi River. There is a memorial marker stone that explains the legend on one side and has a picture of the broken hearted Native American lovers on the other. The legend says that an Indian brave and princess from warring tribes were in love. The brave used his canoe to sneak into the area to see her, but someone spotted them and told her father, the chief of the tribe. The chief then offered an otter pelt to whichever warrior tracked and killed the love struck brave. The lovers realized they were being tracked and that he would be killed when they were caught, so they went up the mountain hoping to evade their pursuers. Unfortunately, this didn't work and they were trapped, so rather then be killed the brave decided he would jump from the outcrop. The princess didn't want to live without him so they hugged each other as they lept to their deaths so they would remain...

It was about three boys that in the summer of 1967 set out to experience some of the Mark Twain adventures. They never returned and were never found. Sad. Nice that a memorial was erected and not defaced. The cliff is fenced off, so little ones with supervision should be safe.
