I love my national parks , this is the first time I've visited this particular park, we really enjoyed the feeling of nature and chippers hanging out with us for lunch (a cute little rooster one of the Rangers named ❤️ he got some chips from us from our nachos we got from chillybillys down in naalehu and was a interesting park friend to see at the picnic tables ) you can take a road to get to a bunch of different trails and see some really amazing views. We took the first trail that popped up as we saw this lush green hill when we pulled in. we were rewarded with a clear view all the way down to south point, which we weren't expecting ! There wasn't much of anyone there, if you're looking for a peaceful spot to spend a cool afternoon in nature and walk some easy trails, this is a good spot to check out. Thank you, hawaii National Parks ! This park is off the normal path and was something unique and new to us. It's well maintained with a unique history, beautiful views, and worth visiting. Next time we plan to come earlier so we can see the entirety of the park as it was much larger then expected, seeing endangered species of plants, beautiful koa trees and lehua blossoms on the ohia , ohelo berries and the cinder cone was enough for me to want to...
Read moreOn Father’s Day, my girlfriend and I decided to hike up Pitt Canyon with her two registered service animals, 4 lbs Yorkshire terriers. While leaving the park, we were stopped by a park ranger who informed us that no animals were permitted, even though we were carrying them. Despite apologizing and explaining our situation, he demanded my ID and took a picture of my license. Initially, he let us off with a warning.
However, as we continued our descent, the ranger approached us again, followed us to three separate locations and decided to write a citation, contradicting his previous statement. His behavior was threatening and unprofessional, making us feel harassed. We have been visiting this park for over two years, practicing “Malama” and contributing to the conservation efforts, and have always had positive interactions with other rangers. This ranger, who mentioned he has only been here for two months and is not thrilled with this job, tarnished our view of the park’s management.
Kahuku Unit is a gorgeous place, and it’s sad when you feel you’ve been alienated from a place you love.
We hope the National Park Service addresses this issue to ensure such behavior...

If you’re looking for a surreal, almost preternatural, hike plan check out Kilaue Iki trail at dusk - even better if it’s a bit rainy or foggy. We started the hike around 6:30/7 PM on a rainy evening right after the sun had set which was great for hiking in first part of the trail through rainforest. As we descended, dusk was on the verge of night, and as we made our way through the crater it became darker and “out-of-this world” - see photos. The treck back up from the crater to the trailhead is easily navigable with a headlamp (side note: using the headlamp while hiking through the crater made it harder to follow the marked path).
After the hike, take a short drive up to the crater rim trail and take some remarkable photos of the magma (a must go if it’s rainy or foggy as it enhances the red glow of the magma, see photo).
It was the perfect blend of breathtaking surroundings with a safe splash of adventure!Highlight of our two weeks on...
