Really lovely spot - glad we found this place. We did a short trail near the visitors center - Pu'u o Lokuana Cinder Cone (#1 on map, less than a mile loop) and Palm trail (#4 on map, 2.6mi loop). Would highly recommend both - see pictures Note that 4WD is required if you want to go north of the Upper Palm trailhead, but you can do the two mentioned with a standard car (dirt/gravel roads after the visitors center) or walk an extra 1.2mi from the upper Palm trailhead to the Pali o Ka'eo Trailhead (furthest north ok with standard car). Would love to go back and do more of the trails.

I visited for the first time this week, to join a guided tour to the cinder cone. It was great to learn about the area and see so many healthy 'Ōhi'a trees. Free laminated maps are available and very helpful for navigating a surprisingly vast and beautiful area. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. The shop has a good collection of materials about Hawaiian history and its geology. This branch of the park seems like a hidden gem.

Completely did not expect this to be such a cool sub unit of Volcanoes NP. They have their own Junior Ranger badge and Ranger Wendy is a wealth of information. The barn has a small store and there are tons of trails to hike.
