Very large beach that seems to not be as well known. It’s rocky and the waves are a little rough but there are plenty of little alcoves and pools to check out little fish, crabs, and urchins. If you pick up a handful of sand near the edge of the water there’s a good chance one of the tiny shells will be a hermit crab! The parking lot is huge and free and it’s easy to find a spot away from other people if you don’t like being in crowded places. We had a little section all to ourselves for about an hour in the middle of the day. We were even joined by a sea turtle who swam in and hanged out near us for a while. If you see a turtle, don’t chase it around or try to touch it. Just let it do it’s thing. This one nearly swam right into us before we even knew he was there.

First of all: there are rocks when you enter the water. I am born and raised oahu and am just used to our sandy beaches where you can dive in and swim. That aside, the shore is sandy and nice to lay on. Also, this is a good beach for shell collecting (even if your boyfriend gets a bit competitive over it 😅.) Oh yeah, and a HUGE parking lot so easy to find parking, with bathroom on site, and picnic tables.

Update 2023: Again this is a very nice beach area. Lots of parking and lots of room for everyone. Plenty of lava flows into the ocean for pictures or looking around. 2022: We stopped at this beach for sunset. The evening we stopped was perfect. The crowd was small. The beach seemed nice. Not as clean as others we'd visited but nice enough.

Kailua Beach? The whole westside of Alii Drive is one long beach, where businesses and condos and resorts dont block it! Even then there's ALWAYS public shoreline access. NOONE OWNS THE BEACHES IN HAWAII. Dont let anyone tell you different. In recent years vehicular traffic has been blocked out of parks and beaches, tho this was not always so. There is still an old Hawaiian law that the beaches are open to everyone, always. The new gates compromise the spirit of the law, but not the letter- One can take a hike down beachside to go fishing, all night if you are quiet. Just dont expect your parked car to be unvandalised or even there when you return. No camping is ever allowed outside regulated campgrounds,...
