There are so many things I could say in support of High Point University. I’m sure nearly every review will touch on its amazing community, excellent professors, beautiful campus, and the overall sense of care and compassion bestowed upon its students. What made the experience unique for us was seeing the effect the same school had on our two very different children.
Our first was an introvert, unsure of his major, and had just come from a rather unrewarding high school season. Our second was brimming with confidence, direction, and eager to start college. One knew HPU was “his home” from the day we first visited, while the other was torn between a big SEC school and HPU. In the end both made a perfect decision. One became a leadership fellow and the other a business fellow, each worked hard and both had a great deal of fun! Thanks in part to the career fair, they found internships and a career fit that morphed into the jobs they still have today.
As parents we appreciated that the university offered each child what they needed individually to grow, mature, and excel. Aspects such as dedicated professors and small class size, ease of belonging to different organizations and the freedom to begin some new ones, continuation of the values and expectations they received growing up, and the remarkable sense of belonging to something special all helped shape each child into who he was destined to be.
HPU truly is a unique and very family oriented campus, one we all miss terribly! I like to tell potential families that attending HPU is not a guarantee of an exceptional education, however, if their student desires and reaches for it, everything they need is available to them. It amazes me the amount of degree tracks, staff, buildings, and programming that has been added in the nine years since we first visited. HPU provides state of the art technology, cutting edge learning, and experienced professors to encourage students along their path. Come see for yourself why HPU is such a special place. You and your student will definitely want to be a part of this award...
Read moreI have had two daughters go to High Point University. Both were in the Honors Program. Some of the things we have loved about HPU- 1. It has expanded its grounds from 75 acres to over 600 acres in the last 15 years so all technology, buildings, rooms are state of the art, 2. They are student focused- during covid all classes were live so the kids could have as normal a college experience as possible. They added food trucks and outdoor bubbles so students could meet in small groups with safe distancing,3. They focus on the student holistically not just academically- they have life skills classes (which can sound silly but are really appropriate right now) they focus on teaching students how to be good contributors to community, philanthropy, 4. They help with job interviewing by teaching skills in fine dining like proper etiquette and you have to dress in business attire to attend- the fine restaurants really pushed my girls to try new foods., 5. Academically they open opportunities with top notch leaders in the industry like Netflix founder, Apple leader, etc so the kids get to stretch themselve, 6. Great internship opportunities that rival Ivy League schools- my own daughter got in the internship program through this at JP Morgan in NY and got a FT job offer before her senior year- pretty cool. My last point, is EVERY kid on campus know Dr Nido Qubein. They wave to him, talk to him. When I went to college I had no clue who are president was as he was never visible. On top of all of this, HPU cost the same to send my girls to as it did to send my son to St Johns...
Read moreFather of a graduate--our son received a bachelor's degree from HPU in 2017--we have said many times how happy we are that he went there. Given his academic and other credentials, he could have gone to many schools on scholarships but chose HPU. Although HPU was less well regarded at that time, we subscribe to the "faster train theory"--the idea that HPU was, and continues to be, dramatically improving its standing as an academic institution and in the future will become more and more well known and highly regarded nationwide and internationally. Those who went there in the past will benefit as this process plays out. Looking back, we believe we made the right decision. HPU has been and remains an amazing academic institution, doing incredible work to add to the school's impact through starting new courses, programs, and colleges that aren't available in many other places in NC (outside of the Republic of Chapel Hill). It's been incredible and fun to watch, and validating in terms of the decision we made all those years back. So, why not 5 stars? It's expensive! Our son received the Presidential Scholarship and we still paid more than we would have paid a public state school with no scholarship contribution (but to be clear--we would never have chosen a state school anyway, under any circumstances). Our son went to a private Christian school K-12, so we were happy with HPU's values even though it is not a Christian school per se. It is expensive, even for those gifted academically,...
