It is an easy hike for most, with a few slippery sections. Sneakers or hiking shoes recommended. There is limited parking ($5) or you can arrive on #5 TheBus which starts from the Ala Moana shopping center (across the bridge from Waikiki). If you visit it during the dry season, be prepared to see only a “trickle” as opposed to falls. There is often a lot of tourists on this trail, and many people congregate by the falls. The nature ambiance of the busy Manoa trail is interesting, but doesn’t have the tropical experience of connecting Aihualama trail. For hikers in good shape, I would recommend continuing to the Aihualama trail, which forks left 150 feet before you arrive at Manoa Falls. You can first climb to Manoa Falls and if you feel up to it, also do part or all of the Aihualama trail. The Aihualama trail is “the one less traveled by“ and you will feel much closer to nature than on the crowded...
Read moreʻAihualama Trail is a quieter, more immersive alternative to the nearby Mānoa Falls Trail. Starting from within the Lyon Arboretum, it winds uphill through dense rainforest and botanical gardens, offering a peaceful and less-traveled route. The trail is moderately challenging with some steeper sections, but the payoff is a serene walk surrounded by native plants, birdsong, and occasional glimpses of wildlife.
The waterfall at the end is modest, especially in dry weather, but the journey is the real highlight. We appreciated the solitude and the chance to explore side paths through the arboretum. Just be sure to wear long sleeves and bring bug spray—the mosquitoes can be persistent. Overall, it’s a great choice for hikers looking for a more tranquil and educational...
Read moreThis trail connects to the very popular Manoa Falls Trail. It's about 1.3 miles out and back. We did an additional 0.5 miles to Pauoa Flats Lookout which has beautiful views (there are signs but the look out was a right turn). There is a small bench up and it was quite windy. The entire trail was very muddy even though it had not rained the entire week we were in Oahu. I would not recommend doing this hike without some good shoes. Most of the trail is covered by trees so fairly shady but it is a good amount of uphill and navigating through tree roots and mud. If you are already doing the Manoa Falls Trail, this is an good add on if you are looking for something a bit more challenging and less crowded/touristy feeling compared to the Manoa...
