China walls sign:
Cool video but
Beware.
There have been many deaths here over the years. 14 last year due to Large Sneaker waves sweeping people off rocks and difficulty rock climbing up slippery rocks with waves.
-Sneaker waves. -Stay on dry rocks. -wet rocks slippery (black algae slime) Monitor ocean for 30 min.. big set waves.. can sweep you off the rocks.
Don’t jump:
-If there are waves and surfers -If your not an excellent ocean swimmer In top shape who can swim under big waves and tread water a long time and a rock climber with strong upper body strength who can climb up wet slippery rocks in who knows how to time the waves.
Can be very difficult to rock climb back up slick rocks. Harder than it looks.
You may have to swim under waves and tread water for 30 min.. sometimes it takes several attempts to get out waiting for a lull ( when the waves pass) and a person has to climb all the way to the top of wall fast before next wave comes. If big wave comes while climbing wall. Person has to jump off the rock Wall and swim away from wall so wave does not smash them into the rocks.. It can be difficult and very dangerous.
If your not: in top shape, excellent ocean swimmer, excellent rock climber, Or have any doubt. Don’t jump.
Summer is more dangerous and bigger waves. Listen to and learn from locals.
The right side is shallow with a big hidden rock under the water. Divers have hit their head and died.
If there are big waves don’t jump. Winter is better if its consistently calm.
Again monitor ocean from from high ground dry rocks for more than 30 min.
Waimea bay Rock is better for cliff jumping in the summer (july-Aug) when conditions are flat. But other months Waimea Bay can be huge waves.
North Shore gets big waves in winter and South shore gets big waves in Summer.
Always check the surf report and monitor ocean for 30 min...
Read moreA great little rocky outcrop that has a great view and a challenging cliff jump. I had a great time jumping in and soaking in some sun while I was there. Parking was no issue when I went but it may be different if there's a lot of people there. 10/10 would visit and jump again.
I would recommend that people jumping into the water be strong swimmers comfortable with treading water for minutes. The jump into the water is only around 15 to 20 feet depending on when you go (high tide or low tide), but the difficult part is getting back up the cliff. The waves break against the cliff side and especially during high tide when the waves can get aggressive, will easily cause you to wipeout if you are not careful while climbing back up. You may need to tread water for a bit to watch and wait for the big waves to pass. If you do decide to jump in, be sure there are others there to help you watch for big waves coming in and other surfers or jetskiiers who can rescue you if you get too tired fighting the waves. If it's your first time there definitely take the time to watch how others time and navigate the climb up the wall and listen to those on top who are watching the waves for you. Jump back in the water if they tell you to bail because you do not want to be on the cliff side when a big wave crashes against the wall. That being said, if you are a strong swimmer and very careful, you will have no problem getting back up.
The parking can be a bit limited since there is no formal parking area or lot for access to China Wall. Parking is pretty much limited to whatever free space you can find in the surrounding neighborhood, which was ample...
