Love, love, love it!!! Top of the world type of place. Absolute must when in Oahu. It took us about half an hour to hike up, although be prepared for an hour/hour and a half (that's what they tell you at the entrance), depending on your speed and how crowded the hike is. Bring lots of water and sunscreen! Make sure you have plenty of time to enjoy the views - there are couple of different lookouts and the views are just breathtaking. For $1 entrance fee you will get beautiful panoramic view of Waikiki, which is pretty much the same from helicopter, which costs couple hundred :) The park opens at 6am and closes at 6pm so be sure to come early! Also, if you are claustrophobic - don't go by yourself! In couple of places the tunnels get really narrow and this might feel uncomfortable.

There are 3 free parking areas and street parking along Diamond Head Road. The area seems pretty safe as there are lots of joggers and traffic. A protective wall tries to keep people on solid ground but there are points where some may venture out onto the cliffs feeling invincible. It's a LONG way down! The lookout area is quite high up so the views are gorgeous, sorta similar to the cliffs you find in southern Cali. A long pathway leads down to Diamond Head Beach Park though we didn't walk it. OVERALL: Great photo op spot or place to have a car picnic. Use common sense and stay behind the wall.

You need to make a reservation online before showing up at the park to hike to the top of diamond head crater. But it is only $5.00 and easy to do on their website. It is about 3.5 miles round trip from the nearest bus stop. It’s uphill all the way to the top with several resting stops along the way with something to sit on. It is very hot in the afternoon but there is some shade and breezes to cool you off a bit. There are some machines near the start to buy water, gatorade and soda. The water was $2. The machines take cash or credit card. The view of Waikiki from the top is stunning.

It's well maintained BECAUSE you have to pay a dollar per head to enter the park. We arrived mid morning and the parking lot was full. There was a line of cars waiting for others to leave so they could park. We just went back down to the farmer's market lot and parked for free, then hiked up. We saw people still waiting in line for a spot when we returned a half hour later.

There are always people climbing over the "Do not climb over" signs, which destroys the look of the summit. Some pathetic people have left their trash at the top or along the trail.

I've always been enchanted by Diamond Head and knew I'd never go there. But we made it to Oahu and had to make the hike. I'm 60 and not in the best shape, so I went slowly, stopping when I needed to at wide spots in the trail. It took 35 minutes to hike up. It took 25 to waltz down. That's from the car at the distant parking lot.

Take water. Take water. Take water. Perhaps some protein like cheese sticks and lunch meat. I'm bald and I wore a hat, which helped a great deal.

It's worth doing to...

We were lucky enough to have a friend who had served at Hickam Airforce Base for 3 years back in the 90's. This was one of many places that he took us during our three days on Oahu before we boarded our cruise. Absolutely breath taking views from the top. Probably wise to check it out online before going as I do not believe that it is open every day. We prepaid for parking which enabled us to enter the park and not have to park out on the main road and walk in which was quite a distance. You should save your strength for the hike up. The 4 of us in our party ranged in age from 58-62. We did stop a few times on the hike up to catch our breath but you can always turn around and head back down the mountain if you have to. There's an actual helipad at the top as I'm sure that they have had to call EMS on more than a few occasions. At the top there are military bunkers that were used back in the day and a couple of tunnels to walk through at the top. Watch your head. This is something you could do in a rental car and...
