It's well maintained BECAUSE you have to pay a dollar per head to enter the park. We arrived mid morning and the parking lot was full. There was a line of cars waiting for others to leave so they could park. We just went back down to the farmer's market lot and parked for free, then hiked up. We saw people still waiting in line for a spot when we returned a half hour later.
There are always people climbing over the "Do not climb over" signs, which destroys the look of the summit. Some pathetic people have left their trash at the top or along the trail.
I've always been enchanted by Diamond Head and knew I'd never go there. But we made it to Oahu and had to make the hike. This was one of many places that he took us during our three days on Oahu before we boarded our cruise. Absolutely breath taking views from the top. Probably wise to check it out online before going as I do not believe that it is open every day. We prepaid for parking which enabled us to enter the park and not have to park out on the main road and walk in which was quite a distance. You should save your strength for the hike up. The 4 of us in our party ranged in age from 58-62. We did stop a few times on the hike up to catch our breath but you can always turn around and head back down the mountain if you have to. There's an actual helipad at the top as I'm sure that they have had to call EMS on more than a few occasions. At the top there are military bunkers that were used back in the day and a couple of tunnels to walk through at the top. Watch your head. This is something you could do in a rental car and...
