Not my favorite trail, although perhaps a different time of year might be better? There were NO waterfalls or even much in the way of streams visible from the trail. We crossed through some gullies and could hear water, but not really actually see very much. We crossed the Makiki trail over to Maunalaha and down, and was disappointed at the lack of views. Even Maunalaha only had filtered city views and a few mountain views. Trail was very dry, as it hasn't rained much lately. I would recommend Makiki for a hot day when you want a lot of shade maybe. It goes up and down and up and down 3 or 4 times, so you will get some good cardio. The trail down Maunalaha was entirely tree rooted, so that made the going slow. It's also very steep, so like climbing down stairs really (in fact there were some stair sections toward the bottom). My phone said 775' elevation change, and about 2 miles from Makiki (NW) to the Nature Center. Oh, and there were a bazillion flies that swarmed us at the Nature Center. We ubered back to our car, as we had little interest in hiking back up. We hear a lot of birds,...

The peak of this trail was the first 45 mins and the last 1 hr- where you are swallowed into an magnificent view of green curtains.
I used to love Manoa Falls trail before they made it more accessible and paved the trail, but now this one is our favorite- although there’s no falls.
If you prefer trails with a grand destination of falls, or open ocean views, this is not it- but if you want to experience Jurassic park type of jungle with fairly easy access, without going to Kauai, this is it!
