The amazing architecture of oahu's iconic mid century modern residence the liljestrandhouse is only rivaled by the heartwarming story of the liljestrand family's life long friendship with architect vladmir ossipoff. the elder liljestrands were swedes who grew up in china, while the architect was a russian raised in tokyo. together, they created an intricate and stunning work that is as much art as architecture, combining the language of modernism with surrounding island and asian influences. the opportunity to tour the home privately was a highlight of this trip to the hawaiian islands, and is quite possibly the most inspiring architectural home tour i have ever had due to the home's originality down to the very personal effects of it's original occupants. it is an utter time capsule, reminding us that good taste is enduring, and that things made well can last more than a lifetime. the liljestrands raised 4 amazing children in this house, and lived there until their passing for nearly 5 decades. a guest suite is currently occupied by their eldest son bob and his wife, who have become lifelong stewards of the property so that it's legacy can live on for generations to come. thank you to friend Raj George, cousin Karen Ng, and the liljestrand house foundation for...
Read moreSimply blown away! We found this tour on the AIA website featuring architectural milestones on Oahu. We could not have anticipated how delightful this would be. We met Trudy the Foundation director and were guided through the tour by the docent Linda.
I think it’s more accurate to say you engage with the house and grounds than tour it. Linda led us through this mid century masterpiece as if we were welcome guests and she was the lady of the house sharing all the excitement of a new home. The curiosity and vision of the Liljestrands brought to life by their architect Ossipoff who became an intimate friend and collaborator. The home speaks a thoughtfully curated and well lived life showcasing travel, family time and a profound respect for the beauty of the island.
An absolute must if you visit Oahu! Tour times and spots are limited so book in advance (we got lucky and we also begged a little!). Buy the postcards and the book on Ossipoff’s work. Tours and purchases support the foundation’s work which is so important to preserving this part of...
