I am stationed nearby and had never heard of this park until my family was bored looking for something to do. When this park came up, I figured it would be something fun for the whole family to include our dogs. We arrived and had to wait until a car left before we could enter (there is a park limit that the park staff hold strong to). After getting the green light to enter, we had to go to the welcome center for a rules brief and video. After about an hour, we were finally able to enjoy the park as long as we followed the park rules. If you are planning a trip, leave the dogs at home. Dogs are only authorized in a tiny part of the park. The main thing to bring is patience as the park staff are everywhere and will limit where and when you go places. For instance, my family wanted to go to a certain section of the park but the staff had the road blocked until some of the other guests left. While the park staff would have annoyed me when I was much younger, I wasn’t in a hurry and we just focused on enjoying the park. As far as the park itself, it is really a great little place with a lot of history. Highly recommend visiting it. However, I recommend scheduling a guided tour since visitors only have access to around 1/3 of the park...
Read moreWe wanted to explore and have a quick adventure. Decided to go here. We paid to enter, Then had a 15 minute orientation video. After that we talked to a Ranger and she helped answer questions. Pointed us in the right direction and we were off exploring.
We ended up going the wrong way but successfully found the petroglyph up in the rocks. As we exited we found the correct easier way out thank goodness.
I was thankful we didn't see any snakes. I was attacked by mosquitos. We saw lizards and chipmunks.
Overall it was very pleasant and I love making memories...
Read moreThis is a cool spot to hike to in the northern mountain "self-guided" area of Hueco Tanks. It's a moderately challenging area to get to, partly because the provided directions aren't the easiest to follow (and I have a feeling that may be by design). It's a 20-30 minute walk to the cave, with plenty of steep "trail", but very minor climbing required. By climbing, I mean one spot where you need to get down on all fours for balance; no actual rock/mountain...
