Behold the magnificence of nature, unveiled with a flourish at this extraordinary museum! Prepare to be astounded, for it is no trifling matter to fathom the enigmatic secrets that lie within the realm of Mother Earth. Picture, if you will, the whimsical dance of minerals and rocks, meticulously crafted over eons. Their natural formation, spanning thousands of years, beckons us to ponder the extraordinary forces at play.

The sheer splendor and kaleidoscopic assortment of these geological wonders are nothing short of awe-inspiring. It is an ethereal symphony, a breathtaking tapestry woven by the skilled hands of time. We stopped by the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum last Saturday while visiting Hancock, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. My 8-year-old son is really into rocks, and this museum was perfect for him — full of fascinating displays and local history.

A big thank you to Melanie Starr, who generously took time out of her day to walk us through the exhibits. She answered all of my son’s (many!) questions so patiently, and it meant a lot to both of us. We felt very lucky to catch her while she was available.

If you’re anywhere near Houghton, don’t miss this museum — it’s such a hidden gem, especially for kids who love...

So great! Kids got fun things at the gift shop. The whole family loves the florescent room! We did a campus tour with our prospective student daughter so half the family got in free with that. MTU Student are free all the time. Young children are free and elementary children are reduced price so very reasonable for our big family. Lots of really neat gems and minerals. Shorter kids need a boost to see some items so great time to piggyback or let them rest in stroller. We spent 1.75 hours with half an hour in the gift shop but without small kids I would assume 2 hours if you don't read everything and do a...

This museum rocks! Thousands of different items on display, from all over the world and so many different types. I quite liked how it was arranged, as well. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it walked you through how different minerals are formed, and also had large sections of local interest (e.g. iron & copper from this area of the continent), including telling the history of mining operations in those places. The fluorescent room was also really cool. Quite a variety available in the gift shop, as well, at prices that seemed quite reasonable to me.

An overwhelming collection spanning the entire mineral kingdom! It took me three hours to see it all and I took more than 700 pictures! I've been collecting minerals my whole life and I've never seen such a well-organized and explained collection. I especially like that they show the minerals in their natural state as well as the products that can be made from them. There is also an amazing gift shop where you can take a piece or two home with you. I bought a beautiful pyrite cube and some specular hematite and I got a piece of labradorite for my friend.
