This place is truly beautiful! I began bringing my children here about 8 years ago when someone had suggested it to me as a place to go with walking trails. I have memories of visiting here when it was still a zoo, many years ago. Remnants of the old zoo still remain , and there are "information plaques" along the path that explain the old exhibits along with some that describe different trees and plants. This place is FILLED with beauty and nature. There is a butterfly garden and so many different little animals such as birds, bunnies, chipmunks, turtles, there's just so much to see and too much to describe! Alls I can say is you HAVE to see it for yourself to understand..The grounds are HUGE with multiple paths along the way. There is a 9-11 memorial near the front gate which is very nicely dedicated and well put together. The general route is paved, however there are many dirt paths and trails as well to explore. There is a large pond, and a brook running through the center of the grounds, where we found snails and turtles and although I didn't see any myself, I am positive there are fish because we did see some people with fishing poles. There is also a large playground very close to the parking area and multiple picnic tables strewn throughout the park. My children love coming here. Whether to take a leisurely walk, or play at the playground, we always spend at least a few hours. The park itself is pet friendly and there is also a dog park on the other side of the parking area when you first pull in. There is plenty of parking , and although there seemed to be many people here, the place is so big you could barely tell. The park is is extremely clean and well maintained. I highly recommend this spot for...
Read moreHistory: This park was once Benson's Wild Animal Kingdom. One of the many best zoos ever. It was sad to see it end. There was going to be some major building on this location. The locals decided to not allow anyone to build on it. The town now owns it. The locals keep it up on their own.. Every one is a volunteer. You will even find my 2 children on a park bench in a picture. On the old ticket booth from the zoo. My mom put it there. You will find a few spots that still have the Gorilla and monkey cages from the old zoo days. There is a beautiful pond where you will see a lot of ducks and fish and fish. You will see swamp lands. Other ponds as well. The old trails from the zoo are still there. So there's lots of trails to wander on. There's even a hat shell from music events. There are many spots to have picnics. The old shoe that we played in as children is still there. There is now a pocket area for the children to play. It has a memorial to 911. It is definitely handicap accessible. That is a must. When most parks are lacking this feature. There is plenty of space for big events and small events. It's a very family oriented park. Because because it has many trails.. It is great for runners and Walker's. Even those who have trouble with walking can walk these trails. Because you can take your time and the ground is soft for your feet. It also has many trails to walk on that has sidewalks. It has a small store area. Which will be added to soon. This is one of my favorites. It is very safe. There was plenty of parking and handicapped parking for people to enter. And I forgot to mention. There's a dog park for all...
