What a fall from grace Rackham has had, even more depressing to realize the course essentially clawed it’s way back from being a useless money pit for the longest time. Long story short, do NOT waste your money with these clowns.
Rackham had a few good years around 2015-2019 with a competent grounds crew and GM, but after the firing of the head grounds keeper it has noticeably sunk back to being the joke of a course it once was. GM doesn’t care to hire competent crews or Marshall’s anymore so you’re left with a course that consists of wildly under maintained greens, fairways that are 75% dirt and mud, and sand that somehow stays perpetually rock hard. The pace of play has become such a joke that finishing 18 in 5 hours is considered a godsend. You’re told that tee times after 5:30 don’t matter and it quickly becomes “first come first serve” format despite the manager insisting that isn’t true (it is). You will actively find that people drive over tee boxes and greens with carts with no repercussions, divots in the fairway are never filled in, and the greens look like a constant mine field.
Long story short, this course is an absolute joke. The marshal doesn’t know how to coordinate tee times (last time we played there were 16 players lined up for tee times and it was considered “fast”), the grounds look worse each day that passes, and the manager doesn’t care one bit. Save your money for literally anywhere else.
Edit for the owners response: The course is constantly like this when even the slightest bit of rain falls because you never restrict cart use. Almost every respected course I’ve played restricts play to walking on wet days and yet Rackham clearly does not. Even in the pictures it’s clear that the greens and tees were torn up because carts were riding over essentially a mud pit. Using the rain as an excuse for the poor condition of the property is a lame attempt to explain why carts are being used on flooded fairways. What’s even worse about your reply is it doesn’t address the complaint about slow play nor does it address the issue with tee times not being adhered to in the slightest.
It’s sad that you phrase my preferences of having the Marshal stick to tee-times as booked, having the fairways not be constantly gouged out from carts running during floods, and adhering to a rate of play under 3 hours for 9 holes as anything beyond bottom barrel requirements for a halfway decent course. Cheap cop-out reply. The title of “clown”...
Read moreDecent course for twilight value on weekdays ($20) or weekends ($30). Front 9 is way less of a challenge than Donald Ross designed back 9, your scores will reflect as much. Front 9 is possible to "bomb into submission" if you can hit drives 270+ yards, its almost impossible to miss left or right, as tree cover is minimal and easy to get on green within regulation, even with a wayward, long drive. Greens, although somewhat slow are in pretty decent shape and surprisingly firm.
Once you make the turn, however you are greeted with a long par 4 on 10 where misses left or right pretty much guarantee a bogey. 11, 12, and 13 are all challenging risk / reward holes that can punish aggressive plays and make scrambling much tougher with your misses. 14 is my favorite hole on the course; a par 5 that is reachable but requires a long, faded tee shot over a well placed fairway bunker leaving about a 240 shot into the green that can be made. 15 from the blue tees is another challenging hole that requires a draw from the tee box. 16, 17 and 18 are a fun ending to the challenging back 9 of the course.
The staff and starters at the course are extremely friendly and helpful, but buyer beware that pace of play concepts here are basically non- existent. Your best bet is to show up as an individual for twilight and bank on making some new friends on the course! My biggest complaint of the course is the lack of effective groundskeeping on certain holes. A lack of good water drainage has really messed up the center of many fairways, consequentially if you hit a perfect drive right down the middle on hole 9, 11, or 18 your second shot will be from "ground under repair" which is worse than hitting from the rough. Hopefully as the dryer, summer, weather comes, however, this situation can get...
Read moreOn Friday July 28 2023, someone hit a ball so hard that it was supposed to go into the protective netting enforced at all courses. This place did not have theirs up, or forgot to, and my boyfriend and his vehicle paid the price for it. He was driving on 696, 75mph, when a golf ball hit his windshield directly where his head was. If he was going any faster, he could have DIED. I know the manager of the golf course spoke with my boyfriend but DID NOT OFFER ANY COURSE COMPENSATION NOR A REPLACEMENT, barely even an apology! My boyfriend had to pay for a brand new windshield out of pocket and lost a full days work, at no expense to you people but to his construction business and work van. I'm worried for the safety of patrons driving past your facility and using it. Whoever's job it was to place the netting back up should be FIRED. This establishment should be reviewed by the City of Detroit, I will make it my personal vendetta to contact every city and state official until this is taken care of. I am absolutely angry, mortified and DISGUSTED to be anywhere near your establishment and will tell anyone and everyone that listens to STAY FAR AWAY.
The irresponsibility and laziness is out of control and quite frankly, LUDACRIS.
Response to Owner: If you followed protocol, I feel as if he would've been contacted by corporate or someone higher than you to make sure this was taken care of. What about the man that continued to blatantly laugh and disrespect Jacob while expressing his frustrations? Your company is a joke. You'll be hearing from...
