Update in 2023:
AMROCK keeps doing exceptional work. I continue to feel the most comfortable here compared to any other gym, and I'm a decent athlete. So it's really important to me to see that newcomers feel welcome, and that is what I see here.
Over the past two years, I have progressed tremendously in my fitness levels in regards to strength, overall work output, gymnastics skills, and even my physique. They have a nutrition program which I love. They put on community events like vision boards, in house competitions, workshops with other professionals in town, and fun challenges, not always fitness related, but always with the goal of bettering yourself. They continue to impress me, and I am happy but not surprised at the growth they've seen over the last two years đ Original:
People who do CrossFit love CrossFit and their community, so it's not uncommon to see most boxes have really high ratings. And while I get that everyone wants their gym to be the best, there's a few criteria that I like to see. As a physical therapist, I need to be able to send my patients to somewhere that I know they'll be taken care over and given good coaching and this place does that very well.
First thing I like to see is the coaching staff being very involved. You don't want someone just pointing to the workout and saying "Have fun, go for it." To me, that's lazy and not what you should expect from a good gym. The coaches are very involved here, especially for newer members, giving them appropriate options for their skill level. Also, I think this might have been a COVID thing, but they decided to keep it which I appreciate. Classes are capped at 12 members, which is a good ratio, most are under 10. If you start getting 20+ members in a class, that's a lot of bodies to watch and give individual attention to, and detracts from the overall experience (unless you have multiple coaches for one class).
Second thing is the programming. Some gyms have a very "strength biased" program schedule, and try to cram way too much volume in one hour. They try to ALWAYS do a strength piece and a Metcon, and this is the opposite of what CrossFit HQ teaches. At AMROCK, there's always a good, structured warm up and you really get prepped for the intended stimulus. This extra time also allows the coaches to go over points of performance and movement standards for the lifts, troubleshoot any scaling options, give strategies for tackling the WOD, and take time for any questions that come up.
Further, a lot of gyms tend to neglect the gymnastics movements. They think their members "don't want or just can't do those movements..." Well of course they can't, because you never program them in! AMROCK actually embraces this and regularly programs handstand, bar/ring work, and bodyweight movements, which is key if you're actually planning to develop all domains of your fitness level and follow CrossFit's philosophy.
One more thing that you'll notice is that the coaches here actually take the classes with you, meaning they believe in their programming. If you get coaches who coach one thing for their members but then do something completely different for themselves, that's sometimes a red flag for me. But they are more than willing to get sweaty and throw some weight around with you here.
Lastly, I shouldn't have to say this, but cleanliness is also an important factor. Everyone knows to wipe down the equipment they used here afterwards, which is actually a big deal in these times today.
Overall, great gym. Good mixture of people and skill levels. This picture was taken after I got absolutely crushed by one of the workouts. But in summary, this is what you should expect from your CrossFit experience whether you're brand new or a veteran. I would not hesitate to send any of my...
Read moreI cannot say enough about this incredible place. I started Crossfit with AMROCK almost 5 years ago, and I have to say that I have become a completely different person mentally and emotionally. I've spent more than a few workouts crying and feeling unworthy and depressed, like I'm just too fat and I don't deserve to feel better. The owners of AMROCK and the other incredible coaches have stuck with me, sometimes cried with me, and helped me build both mental toughness and physical strength. The owners, Rocky and Andrea, take the time to develop relationships with each person that comes in--a task that is becoming increasingly difficult given their membership growth over the years. You will not be passed over or forgotten in this place. Over the last 5 years, I have had to have my gallbladder removed, another surgery to remove a kidney tumor, a pulmonary embolism, and a hysterectomy. I can confidently say that without the support from AMROCK, I would not have been able to work through all of my fears and emotions, let alone the physical recovery, nearly as well as I did. If you need help with your nutrition, I received solid, truly individualized, habit-based nutrition coaching. Meaning, I wasnât just handed a meal plan and told âgood luck!â My coach and I talked about what I really struggled with, and what habits I needed to build to get better. Itâs been extraordinarily helpful and refreshing have a nutrition coach that listens to me and helps me move forward without making me feel like a failure when Iâm having difficulties learning a new habit. If I hadnât been a little bit brave and tried AMROCK a few years ago, I would have missed out on knowing the some of the best, kindest, most genuine, and most hilariously fun people in the world. Even as adults, we all need a positive place where we can be ourselves and grow without judgement and...
Read moreIf you havenât experienced the chaos, sweat, and hilarity of CrossFit Amrock, youâre seriously missing out! This place is more than just a gymâitâs like a fitness comedy show, but with more burpees and a side of soreness.
Letâs start with Coach Logan, the âBarbell Whisperer.â Somehow, he gets you lifting heavy things you didnât even know existed. Heâll casually tell you to âjust add a little more weightâ while youâre contemplating life choices. Logan has that calm confidence that makes you think, âYeah, I totally got this!ââuntil you donât, and then heâs there to pick you up with a grin.
Coach Mauri is a bundle of energy in human form. Sheâs your best friend and worst nightmare all at onceâcheering you on with that infectious smile while throwing in a set of burpees you didnât see coming. Itâs all fun and games until you canât feel your legs. But youâll keep coming back because Mauri makes you believe in your superpowers, even when your body says otherwise.
Then thereâs Gretchenâthe queen of mixing tough love with a wicked sense of humor. Sheâll fix your form with a joke thatâll make you laugh so hard, youâll forget youâre dying mid-WOD. One minute, youâre her favorite student, the next, sheâs making you regret eating that extra cookie last night. But hey, itâs all part of the charm!
And Rockyâthe man, the myth, the silent motivator. He doesnât even need to say much. His sheer presence is enough to make you rethink quitting. Rocky just stands there, giving you that look, and suddenly, you find the willpower to finish the set. Itâs like he communicates telepathically through sheer intimidation and kindness rolled into one.
CrossFit Amrock is where you go to push your limits, laugh till your abs hurt (from the jokes, not the crunches), and leave wondering why you ever doubted you could do one more rep. Itâs madness in the best...
