How do you select the best with so many helicopter flights offered in Juneau?
With two different glacier landings and the pilot as your guide, this gave us the best value for money.
The tour includes approximately 50 minutes of helicopter flying time and two separate landings of roughly 15 minutes each. The total tour duration is about 80 minutes. Allow up to 45 minutes for return transportation from where your ship docks and the safety briefing.
After arriving at the heliport, you will be outfitted in glacier boots and given a safety briefing by the friendly tour attendant; thank you, Parrish.
The pilot will choose two other glacier landings among the 36 named glaciers stretched across 1,500 square miles of the Juneau Icefield; a few landing possibilities include the Herbert, Taku, Norris, Gilkey, and Hole in the Wall or the famous Mendenhall Glacier.
Most other tours provide a brief view of the lower glaciers and a shorter flight time with no landings on the glaciers. Therefore, the Pilots Choice is the best.
The flight takes you over ice spires, deep blue crevasses, meltwater pools, beautiful glaciers and mesmerising views of the beautiful Alaskan terrain. . With approximately 50 minutes of helicopter time, you have plenty of opportunities to take in views of steep alpine ridges, lush rainforest, and the incredible glaciers below.
Our Temsco Helicopters pilot Josiah was incredible, and we landed on two different glaciers and had the opportunity to spend time walking around Herbert and Mendenhall glaciers.
Josiah kept us excitedly on the edge of our seats as he expertly manoeuvred the aircraft safely between cols in the mountains and landed neatly alongside a crevasse on the glacier. It was thrilling and definitely one of the most amazing experiences we have had flying. Thank you, Josiah.
The colours of the glaciers were gorgeous, and the spectacular mountain ranges were a sight to see. Josiah will also keep you posted on all the wildlife below and the eagles soaring above.
It was a magical morning, an experience we never thought possible, and you will have a bounce in your step for the...
Read moreWe booked and excursion through an Alaskan cruise and had a wonderful time! Upon arrival, we watched a safety video, signed paper work, then went to the watch the helicopters come in. The staff talked to us during our time near the hanger and Alyx showed us great hospitality. He was fun, lively, and shared stories of his life in Juneau all while making sure we were getting to our aircraft safely. During that time, it allowed us to connect with the couple that would accompany us on the helicopter which was nice since we would be spending time with them on the glacier as well.
The glacier itself was beautiful but also a bit more warm than one would think (bring sunglasses and sunscreen). The best part of the excursion was the amazing view of the glacier and surrounding mountains in the area that flying gave us. The dogs were full of energy, loving, and definitely wanted to run! It was interesting to learn that some of the dogs were rented/borrowed from individuals who want to give their dogs an outlet for all of the energy they contain especially if they live in warmer climates. The dogs and the musher led us on a short lap around the site allowing a few stops to let us pet the dogs, talk about the pack, their behavior, and how their behavior impacts the team pulling the sleds. It was interesting that in a pack of mostly males, the two females were leading it. Another interesting part was all of the cleaning they have to do to keep the glacier clean and safe from doggy waste (including dog hair). Who would’ve thought?
Bite the bullet, fork over the money, and sign yourself up for the adventure! Don’t forget to catch Alyx in the Buzz Lightyear sunglasses and throw a few snowballs on the glacier since the snow is...
Read moreI posted this review about 9 months ago from my work account accidentally. I wanted to ensure it remained after that account is deleted. We booked a glacier landing thru a 3rd party excursion company. First, Temsco did a phenomenal job. The helicopter ride and pilots were great - the glacier experience was amazing. We had a hiccup because our 3rd party booking company had told us Temsco would pick us up at our cruise dock. We arrived 20 minutes later than our departure time due to this. While this was not at all the fault of Temsco, they found a later time slot to fit us in and it all worked out, for which I am very grateful. However, this was the only excursion out of 6 that did not pick people up from the cruise docks. For the price of the excursion, I would expect that to be part of the deal. Although, had I been aware, I likely still would have done it and just prepared ahead of time to get to the Temsco office on time. After they rebooked us on a later flight, Temsco sent me an email that had very specific instructions on how to get to their office (so if you book directly, they do provide you with this information). I will say that Skagway was the only port we stopped in where we had absolutely no service - so I couldn't call them to say we were running late, and we couldn't use our GPS to get us to their office. So, if you book Temsco, just be sure you know how to get to their offices and allow plenty of time to do so. :) There is a city bus, but it is $5 per person for the day and makes...
