Went for a two day backpacking trip out in a section of the red river gorge geological area that I’d never been before. I was not disappointed. Loved the hike down. The whole area has an ancient, untouched feel about it. Absolutely beautiful! And at the bottom, a lovely stream to refill the water bladders and cool down the boot feet. If there was a down side, it was the incredibly loud and annoying whippoorwills that were calling all night long. Sometimes it pays to bring earplugs. 😉

I chose to do Rough Trail over to Chimney Top Rock Rd. The first half of the trail lived up to it's name. Impressive ascents/ descents made for some work. A recent mudslide made for debris across the Trail in one section. Trail has waterfalls, rocky creeks, massive trees and moss covered boulders. I half expected to see a dinosaur.

Went for an overnight in mid August. It was hot and the bugs were very aggressive. Nice trail, lots of steep climbs.

Very beautiful trail, rough and a little sketchy due to washout in some areas but so beautiful, lush rhododendrons and a beautiful stream with good backcountry sites for overnight backpacking. Please Leave No Trace and don't litter! Bury or burn toilet paper and carry out what you bring in, we see and collect a lot of...
