The information provided before signing up, stated that it was good for beginners. When I arrived, there were 3 other people and I was the only beginner. I'd only been on a kayak once before and it was on a lake. I kept on tipping over, but I was ready to give it another go. The guide provided me with a kayak that was more suited for a beginner like me. She did give us the option of wearing life jackets as we'd be crossing a canal of 20-25ft deep. I didn't choose the life vest as I figured I'd be OK. The trip itself was really nice, especially when we started paddling out and went through the mangroves. Our guide was able to scoop several sea life and that was really interesting. I found the mangroves a little hard to manoeuvre through, but managed not to get stuck. As we got ready to go back, our guide told us that it would be a little rough going back as the tide was receding and the wind had picked up a bit. She then scooped up a huge starfish and passed it around for us to touch. I passed, as I noticed that just sitting there, I felt how strong the tide was and I was more focussed on not drifting too far away from the rest. As we started back over the canal, i really wished I had worn a life vest. The water was choppy and paddling was really hard for me. I paddled as strongly as i could, but it seemed like to group was just moving further away from me and I kept on thinking that if I tipped over, how strong would that current be and would I be able to swim against it. And the guide and the rest of the group were so far ahead that they may not even have heard me yell for help. When we eventually got back, my legs were shaking and my right hand seemed like it was stuck in a spasm. I didn't realise how tense my whole body had become in the hope that I'd make it back safely! This may not be the best trip to do for first timers and especially in windy conditions. Other than my inability to keep up with the group, I'd definitely recommend...
Read moreI would not recommend this company at all. My friend and I booked the boca chica morning tour. When we booked, we were not told that we were required to drive and not bike to the location. We called the morning of and were told that we would be picked up at our hotel. When the car arrived, I opened the door and gagged at the amount of cigarette smoke that was in the car. The car was also very dirty. Our tour guide (who picked us up) had a bad attitude from the start. When I asked him how he was doing he replied "I could have used another hour of sleep." He also texted while driving us to the dock. When we arrived at the dock, my friend and I took our masks off since we were outside. The guide proceeded to yell at us to put our masks back on and went on a rant about how he would not have us threatening his livelihood by not wearing a mask. If he had just informed us nicely that we were required to wear a mask on the dock we would have obliged. The dock area is really sketchy and dirty. When he showed us the restrooms he commented that he was surprised that they were actually clean. The actual tour was not much better. While the area is beautiful and we got to see some amazing wildlife, the tour guide ruined our time. He proceeded to ask us questions and then scoff at us when we got them wrong. He refused to answer the questions and wanted us to keep guessing. I felt like I was back in school with a mean teacher. He then proceeded to ask us if "we wanted him to shut up or to keep mansplaining everything to us for the entire trip." While the pamphlet made it sound like we would get out and swim, we never once got out of the kayaks. The tour guide also brought his dog who would not stop barking and whining. It was a total waste of...
Read moreFun and informative. My wife and I took a sunset kayak tour with Blue Planet on our recent vacation in Key West (12/5). We were lucky enough to have Andy Parsons as our tour guide.
We are no strangers to kayaking. We have a few here in upstate New York and have spent tons of time on the rivers, lakes and ponds of the Adirondacks. We haven’t spent much time on the ocean though and signed up for the guided tour hoping to see some interesting sights and sea life. Andy did not disappoint!
We not only saw a variety of sea life up close and personally but learned a heck of a lot too. Andy has a wealth of knowledge and a great sense of humor too. Since we ventured through a veritable forest of mangroves after sunset he was also thoughtful enough to bring headlamps for everyone - and bug spray and extra bottles of water. The guy is just great; really personable and a genuinely nice guy. He even gave us a great trip on dinner. The killer tuna nachos at Hogfish Bar and Grill were awesome! On the water and off, you never steered us wrong, Andy. Thanks again, my friend!
I highly suggest you all book a tour with Blue Planet…and request...
