Chicago's South Side is known for tight-knit neighborhoods and historic architecture, but one of the city's hidden gems is the expansive green space of Dan Ryan Woods. Nestled between Gary Avenue and 79th Street, the park feels like a world away from the hustle of the city, though the highrise buildings still peek over the trees as a reminder of urban life just outside the forest.
Walking the trails that weave through the woods, I am always amazed at the solitude one can find amidst such an urban jungle. Towering oaks provide shade during the hottest days of summer, and colorful autumn foliage lines the paths in fall. Birdwatchers come from all over the region to spot woodland species like Northern cardinals, blue jays and woodpeckers in their natural habitat. A quiet sense of peace descends as city noises fade and nature takes over.
The heart of Dan Ryan Woods is the east side, with its creek valley and open fields among the trees. Students from nearby Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences frequent the park, and kids play tag on the rolling hills while parents picnic on blankets. It's the perfect escape for city dwellers young and old seeking a breath of fresh air.
If you're visiting Chicago's South Side, make sure to carve out a couple hours to unplug and unwind amidst the serenity of Dan Ryan Woods. The vibrant energy of the city will still be there when you...
Read moreDan Ryan woods : Awww wow so pleasant and natural % But the best part ...." FRESH AIR !" The smell of the leaves , dirt , the wood of the ole fallen trees and branches . No smell of bubble gum , or fruity nasty smelling perfume and cologne . and sour body lotions . Or greasy hair sprays and all that maddening stuff !! (ha ha ha) For a natural boy like me to have to endure . When these obnoxious odors are present in the woods of Dan Ryan , they are quickly swept away by the winds gently blowing through the trees and over the grasslands of the woods . Ps. Only thing go good with the woods' atmosphere is Beer , A Barbecue , The smell of motorcycles , Jeeps , And the smell of fresh clean sweat of a natural down to 🌎 earth female . I enjoy the Dan Ryan Woods myself % use to live right across the streets from it . Much much better than riding on that candie-as (ha ha ha) smelling , bubble & chewing gum C.T.A. transit...
Read moreI want to give a special thanks to the custodian Ms. Sandi... Im not sure if this is her exact title but she is an employee at the Dan Ryan Woods Forest Preserve off 87th & Western... I came across Ms Sandi early Sunday morning. She was all smiles on a cloudy day. She stopped working to speak with me. She answered any questions I had with the most gracious demeanor. My family was having a Family Reunion Farewell Brunch at the Pavilion on this day. It was while I was trying to find the Pavilion that I came acrosss Ms Sandi working diligently to keep the grounds clean & sanitized. I appreciate her kindness & im hoping the park district awards her in some way for going above & beyond in showing hospitality. The Bible says be careful how u treat strangers because u might be entertaining an Angel... Thank...
