I don’t usually leave reviews, but I feel this needs to be said. I visited this library with a few of the individuals I work with, all of whom have special needs, including autism. We were so happy to see how excited they were to be there, especially one who loves Elmo books. Unfortunately, our experience was not a pleasant one.
A staff member told us that we couldn’t be in the children’s section because the kids there might feel “intimidated” by my participants — even though there were no children at all in that area at the time. She said this in front of my participants, and one of them, who is verbal and understands perfectly, became sad after hearing her words. We felt discriminated against, and this situation clearly violated basic human rights and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in public spaces, including libraries.
In addition, Connecticut law (General Statute §46a-64) protects every individual’s right to full and equal access to public accommodations, making it illegal to deny service or fair treatment based on disability.
As a community program that supports adults with disabilities, we always visit places to promote inclusion, kindness, and respect — not exclusion. Libraries should be safe and welcoming spaces for everyone, regardless of their abilities.
