I called a week before arriving and spoke with a woman about their tours. She said they had one at noon and one at two and they take around an hour or so depending on questions. We first went to Organ Cave for their walking tour and it ran over around 10 minutes since there was an older couple who needed a lot of breaks. We called the distillery to get directions since the address would not show up in our gps. The girl could not give directions and sounded like she was drunk. We went back into Organ Cave gift shop and they gave us directions. We showed up at 12:05pm. I stood in their tasting room for around 5 minutes while the employee was talking to a couple and the other employee was standing in front of the cash register. Neither said anything to me and I had to approach them when the couple left. I asked her if we could join the noon tour. She then proceeded to tell me it was cancelled 5 minutes after noon but if she could of stopped her personal conversation long enough to ask me how she could help me then she would of known we were waiting for the tour. I left and my husband spoke with her. He said with there being two of us couldn't we get done with the tour faster than normal and she told him that if they don't start at noon it will run into the 2 o'clock tour. The parking lot was empty at this point and she was just using this as an excuse. My husband asked her if it was her just being lazy and didn't want to give the tour. She then told him to leave and she didn't want to give him a tour. The place is no bigger than a barn and would of taken 30 minutes max to do the tour. The employee then proceeded back into the tasting room were she and the other woman started drinking. I will never be back and waste my time again. I had expected to take the tour and then sit down in the tasting room and buy anything my husband wanted so they really missed out and I will never buy a smooth ambler product because of how horrible they acted. Don't waste your time or money here. Thankfully we went to Kirkwood Winery and Distillery and they made up for the horrible experience...
Read moreWhile driving through Southern West Virginia over the Easter holiday, my wife and I discovered a Bourbon distillery just outside of Lewisburg, WV. Not knowing much about Bourbon, as I primarily sip a dram or two of Scotch and Irish whiskey, we decided to stop in to take advantage of the tour and tasting that Smooth Ambler offered. It was fantastic! The tour guide was extremely personable and knowledgeable as he gave me a tour of their facility, and even allowed me to taste the yeast during fermentation! He also was extremely kind enough to answer all of my questions about the distillation process.
But, my favorite part was the tasting. My wife and I tried four or five different varieties of Smooth Ambler’s bourbon! They were all excellent, with the common denominator, being a nice spicy cinnamon flavor, with hints of caramel and vanilla. Maintaining some restraint, I was able to walk away with only one bottle of Old Scout! The Gift shop was also nice in that I really liked the glassware that was available for purchase.
But, most of all, we really enjoyed the staff at Smooth Ambler during our tasting! They were so relaxed and funny, that my wife immediately made a connection with them, and the next thing we knew - two hours of conversation had passed! It was awesome.
If you are meandering through the Lewisburg area, I highly recommend you stop by and see this little gem of...
Read moreWe always try to check out local distilleries and breweries when we are on a trip. I have to say this one was in my top 10 for a few reasons. First off it is a super laid back place. So if you are one of those go with the flow kind of people you will enjoy this, but if you are anyway high maintenance you may get a little frustrated. Don't worry have drink and relax! Secondly let's start off with the Moonshine shall we!? For those who are familiar with moonshine you know it has a bite. I'm sorry did I say bite I meant kick in the ass, but this a pretty smooth moonshine. Moving on to the vodka, this was amazing. I am not a vodka drinker but this blew me away! From the smoothness through the hints of vanilla it is one a kind. I'm not gonna talk about the Bourbon and Whiskeys for three reasons. One, that's what they specialize in, two, there is a lot to learn about the products the offer and three, that's what your going there for anyway. Finally, here is the shocker my favorite part was the bourbon filled chocolate truffles they introduce you to during the tasting! It was like everything good and wonderful in life packed into a half an inch chocolate caramel ball. Omg!!! Anyways from the relaxed atmosphere, to the great beverages and chocolate, and finishing it off with some unexpected things in the gift shop you can't go wrong at...
