Open 7 days a week from 7am to sundown, we stopped here on a Friday afternoon with no one but the maintenance guy Leon outside watering plants. He was kind enough to give us a tour of the church and grounds and give us some history. It's a very uniquely painted church which was completely repainted four years ago (took 2.5 years) so it's very vibrant inside. The stained glass is just gorgeous too! Behind the church is Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto (a fountain) which he said local farmers built by digging up any kind of rock they could find. Read moreI was sitting in the church parking lot eating. There were still plenty of available parking places. After I noticed several people were walking into the church I left. I come there every now and again to eat and I never see people. When I noticed a lot of people I left. They called the cops on me and the cops showed up at my house laughing when I told them I was eating in their parking lot. Would not recommend unless you want the cops called on you for absolutely no reason. Waste of resources and someone could have been hurt. Pathetic excuse for a human. Only about an hour and a half from Fort Worth, it is a prime example of the craftsmanship of the settlers some one hundred years before. If you can't get to Schulenberg, TX, to view 5 or so examples of Texas' prized Painted Churches, go to see St. Peters (they have a website with hours) and then run over to St. Jo for lunch.
