Off-the-Beaten-Path Water Activities Near San Juan, Puerto Rico

Very beautiful area. Could have been a fascinating bike ride, if the road were repaired properly. Unfortunately, the parts which are in the woods, are covered with thick layer of rotting leaves and quite slippery (on top of it, bikes rented nearby has the treads worn off). Many holes and missing boards, and branches and fallen trunks. The safest is probably to slowly and carefully ride to one of the beaches and stay there. I guess the road was damaged during the hurricane and not fixed yet. Walking must be perfectly ok though.

Paseo Piñones is an about 5 mile (8 km) long path along the coast for pedestrians and bicycles. In part it consists of a wood plank walk way, in part it is a tarred walk way. The parts with wood are a bit deteriorated (recent wave events and hurricane Maria) and one has to be careful because some planks are broken. There are two alternative ways after 1.7 miles - through the mangrove forest to the lagoon or parallel to the street east. The path rewards with spectacular views and Nature.

I really enjoyed my stay in Puerto Rico but taking the time to come to this area was not worth it. We had read on websites and in tour guide books about renting bikes and riding along here. We didn't end up renting bikes which I'm glad because so much of the boardwalk part of the path was missing so many boards and I would have never been comfortable cruising along. We walked a good section of this path despite what our conscious was telling us. It felt very isolated with a lot of run down spots along it. One of the only spots on the island I questioned our safety. Once we got out to the beach close to the road again we called for an uber. Never ate at any of the kiosks or anything....which I saw maybe 3 restaurants at the beginning but definitely not what I was expecting. So unfortunately, don't waste...

So this beach is not for swimming and the area is a bit questionable. It’s definitely not for tourists. The beach is not maintained and there are no bathrooms or showers or beach chairs. He’s good for pictures and local food. Be very mindful coming here and do not bring a lot of belongings. All of the locals were staring at us. I am an experienced traveler and this place gave me pause. We watched multiple groups get dropped off then get right back into their cars and leave after looking around bewildered. Lots of garbage and police on jet skis!! A very...

This place is known for the food like empanadilla and Spanish food is so good you have visit this place if you go to Puerto Rico. The rich flavors of the empanadilla filled with savory meat and spices are a true delight for the taste buds.
