The worst international student service I experienced, for the following reasons: (1) The woman and the man at the front desk were obviously biased against Asian students and towards Latino students: They let three Asian students who came in early AND were enrolled students at UCLA (including summer sessions) wait for more than half an hour while chatting about Brazil and Columbia with a Brazilian student who came in late AND was NOT a student at UCLA but came here on behalf of his girlfriend. Three staff spent more than forty minutes working with this Brazilian student while all the three Asian students were dismissed in ten minutes, right before they were closed. They gave a warm welcome to Latino students but a cold shoulder to the Asian students who paid a lot for their service. I waited for forty minutes, only to get this one-sentence instruction: “You should email your question to UCLA summer sessions, not us.” More insultingly, despite my graduate degree in English from a top American university, one of the three staff thought I couldn’t understand his instruction in English and repeated it in Chinese. But he did not repeat his instructions in Portuguese or Spanish to the Latino students he helped; (2) This is only applicable to the international service at UCLA summer sessions, which is affiliated with the international center at UCLA, i.e., the Dashew Center: More...
