This is mecca for Southern rock fans. Comprehensive display of artifacts (photos, clothing, musical instruments, etc.) from all periods of the band's history and precursors. I was impressed that some of the band members' actual clothing was hanging in the closets of their respective bedrooms and other items like Duane's book collection, curated by family members. I would encourage all fans to support the private foundation that funds the museum and is working on an expansion. House museums are costly to maintain and staff. I purchased a T shirt and book about the Big House that is excellent quality. The house tour is self guided. While everything is well done, I would hope that in the future the foundation will prepare an introductory film to introduce more casual fans to the band and its history and work on some additional in depth aids to visitors like, for example, headsets with a narrated commentary on the artifacts in each room. Maybe you could get Devon Allman and Duane Betts (Greg's and Dickey's sons) to perform the narration or others who knew the band personally! Kudos to Kirk and Kirsten West for assembling the core of the collection and keeping it together and thanks to the Foundation for maintaining a...
Read moreI gave this 4 stars instead of 5 stars because I've been there a few times and the only way I'd give it 5 stars is if it expanded to every house on vineville. There's so much cool stuff in this Museum about the Allman Brothers yes but about music in general out of the wonderfully fertile musical ground of Macon Georgia. Each time I go I remember something I want to see from before but the display is changed. So maybe it's not fair that I give it 4 out of 5 Stars cuz having everything all the time and we having the time and patience is really isn't going to happen.
Biggest piece of advice like it would be for any to or that you do is take your time. Whenever there's a self-guided tour I tend to always take a right hand turn and that way I get to systematically see everything without trying to remember where I am and what I've seen and what I haven't. I can walk through this place in about 30 minutes and get quite a bit out of it. Or I can spend for 5 hours. The rotating staff is more than accommodating and you know what what they don't know a lot of times the other fans in the room might. So just get to know the building and what's in it take a second to meet the...
Read moreThis is a super cool place to check out. We aren't huge Allman Brothers Band fans so we kind of joked about the fact they had a Museum. We were not disappointed. My boyfriend plays guitar and he was so excited at how man they had on display. He was also surprised at how many they had open and not enclosed in glass cases. They had so many thing on display from their records and 9utfits they wore for shows to guitars and drums. They had a display of keys they took from hotels from their tours. They allow you to do a tour of the house on your own. They give you a sheet of paper with the numbered walls with a description of what you're looking at. The employees were super nice, the building was well kept and clean. They kid the grouds well landscaped and clean. It is a very cool thing to check out I definitely reccomend...
