Car Puja โ A Difficult Lesson in a Sacred Space
We recently visited the temple for a car puja, hoping to begin a new journey with divine blessings. The temple grounds were peaceful, but what followed was unexpectedly disheartening.
The puja cost us $116, which included items such as one coconut, three apples, four limes, a laddoo, a packet of mixture, and a couple of incense sticks. None of this was listed on the temple website, so we encourage other devotees to call ahead and inquireโespecially if youโre preparing mentally and financially for a special ceremony.
What truly unsettled us was the priestโs demand for dakshina. We had come prepared with gratitude in our hearts and $20 in cashโof which we offered $15 directly and placed $5 in the hundi. However, the priest refused to accept it. He insisted that he could only accept $27, $51, or more, and requested we Zelle him directly. In disbelief, and feeling spiritually cornered, we connected to the templeโs Wi-Fi and sent him $51โon top of what we had already given.
We left feeling disillusioned. A space meant for surrender and connection to the divine had suddenly become a place of pressure and discomfort. What saddened us most was the feeling of being taken advantage of under the guise of devotion. Later, upon reading reviews, we realized we were not alone in this experience.
Canteen Experience
We also visited the canteen, hoping for prasad and a warm meal, but were met with disorganization and delay. We waited nearly 40 minutes for a dosa with no communication about the delay. Unable to cancel the order, we ended up switching to idli instead. While these may seem like small inconveniences, together they contributed to a sense of disconnect from the sanctity we had hoped for.
A Reflection
Through this experience, one thing became clear: God resides in all places, not just within the walls of a temple. Lord Venkateshwaraโs presence is not limited to idols or rituals. I left reminded that true devotion is internalโand that peace, prayer, and divine connection can be found in the stillness of our own homes, untainted by human ego or expectation.
May all seekers find clarity, kindness, and true connection on their...
