Great access to clean beaches, surf and the natural trails further along the ocean and especially those leading uphill to Point Dume, as well as more beaches around it. I love this spot as an alternative to the overly crowded beaches in the area! Absent here is the usual traffic noise of Pacific Coast Highway and the loud tailgate parties. It’s an area of Dume State Beach that’s less visible and with more privacy, just beyond the Sunset Restaurant and the Birdview Avenue turnoff. They did away with the booth collector and gave beachgoers the discretion to check it out and decide whether to self-pay at the ticket kiosk, or look for other arrangements. There’s a caveat of urgency with self-pay parking! I don’t like having to pay for parking for fear of getting fined, even if stopping only to use the restroom. Even worse, struggling to pay before stopping to use the restroom, only to find out the restroom door’s locked. Then there’s the speed-bumps, feeling unnecessarily penalized as a good driver to slow the not so good drivers! I’d have to say the advantages outweigh the downsides. The peace of mind leaving my vehicle unattended for as long as the day use permits, makes the time spent and the adventure here all the more worthwhile!

This is my favorite beach in Malibu. This past visit was on a Friday morning in July and it was more crowded than usual. If you get there early enough, you can usually get a parking space for free on the side of the road driving in. We prefer to pay for parking and drive to the far end of the parking lot. There is a trail from the beach that takes you to the bluff. My daughter and I ducked under the railing and took the short cut. Beware the short cut is extremely narrow. The views are spectacular from any of the bluffs in this area. My daughter has climbed the peak on this beach several times when she was with a friend that had the equipment. The beach is clean and offers restrooms.

This is a great beach for an evening stroll. If there is no marine layer, the sunsets here are consistently awesome. It is an easy drive and roadside parking is free, but the large parking area at the end of the road does have a charge. Around the cliffs of Point Dume at the end of the beach there is a very small beach called Pirate's Cove that you can wade around the coastal boulders to get to.
