I stayed at Mars Hill for an event and was shocked at how terrible the campus was. For how expensive tuition is ($42,560 at the time of this review), the facilities are in egregious disrepair.
I compiled a short list of my major complaints about the campus: The parking was unacceptably limited. All the buildings smell like mildew. The Wren auditorium has moldy, disgusting seats, so bring a towel to sit on if you ever have to attend a lecture there. The food at the dining hall was very limited and very bad (we drove to the next town for food because the dining hall was so gross). The wifi doesn't reach the dorms, so you have to stay in the main campus buildings to use the internet. (Note: There are multiple networks, but as guests we only had access to one of them. This may be different for students.) The rooms are set up with a common area, 4 bedrooms, and two people per room. Each room has an uneven amount of storage. There is a single dresser for two people that has three drawers. There is only one desk in each room. There is only one hangrail in each room (no closet). Each person gets half of a small wardrobe in the common living room. The rooms are so narrow that two people cannot stand between the beds at the same time. Many people (including me) had bedframes that were breaking and cracking. The mattresses are incredibly old and uncomfortable; they feel like they have been there since the school was founded.
Don't pay good money to go to Mars Hill for your higher education. UNC Chapel Hill costs around $14,000 (rounded up for cost of textbooks) for the same things that are included in the Mars Hill tuition. That makes Chapel Hill more than 67% cheaper than Mars Hill....
Read moreI went there for a semester and I'm so glad I transferred. With only 1,072 students when I attended, it's clear that nobody goes there that isn't an athlete or from around that area. The campus always gave me a ghost town feel. If you like being far from civilization, it's perfect because it's in the middle of nowhere. The student union and gym were absolutely useless with most things being broken and 30 years old. It's not like it's cheap either. Why not just spend the same amount of money at a better college? Bigger schools are so much better. Positive things include the new buildings like Day hall, nursing building, Ferguson. My teachers were...
Read moreMars Hill provides an excellent education with cream of the crop professors and majors offered by only one or two institutions in the state. The historic campus is beautiful though historic significance is given little thought outside of the quad with numerous properties acquired and demolished by the campus to make way for new construction. General disrepair occurs all over campus, namely in dormitories. Staff is excellent and generally helpful in all departments (registrar, financial aid, etc.). Tuition is absurdly overpriced, dining is adequate, and student activities...
