Just Stunning! This park is an absolute must visit. The walking meditation was surreal. Park is clean and maintained well. There is parking available on both sides of route 29. While there are 2 ways to go from the main entrance, you can get to the river either way you go. Choosing the path to the left goes up along the river bank and allows you to bypass some of the more extra rugged trail you encounter to the right, and you come out farther along the river. At that point the trail is wider and easier to navigate. But both directions are totally awesome, and if you have time try both. There are plenty of climbable rocks and stepping stones to get great pictures along the stream, but be extra careful as the sand and mud can make some stones slippery. I recommend hiking shoes. Noticed some people allowing their dogs to go in the river, just remember, it says no swimming for a reason....

President Theodore Roosevelt came here in 1901 and wrote to his son, Ted, saying, “Mother and I had a most lovely ride…way up beyond Sligo Creek to what is called North-west Branch, at Burnt Mills, where there is a beautiful gorge, deep and narrow, with great boulders and even cliffs. Excepting Great Falls, it is the most beautiful place around here. Mother scrambled among the cliffs in her riding habit, very pretty and most...

NW Branch Trail. The Burnt Mills Park is one of the several areas to get on the NW Branch Trail. This park is right off Colesville Road down the road from Trader's Joe and parking is available on both side of the road. The trail goes on both direction from this park and its quite long. The east leg takes you all the way tha SE DC and the west leg takes you to Wheaton Reigonal Park. The trail is very easy to hike except for some big bolders on the east section as you enter from the east park. On the west side there is a dam and...
