This weekend we celebrated the transfer of Elktonia Carr's Beach to the city of Annapolis as an official heritage park. I'm proud that the city, county, state, and federal government all came together to provide the support needed to preserve the history of this beach, conserve the land, and open it up for the public to enjoy. This historic Black beach was owned and operated by the Carr family from 1926 through the 1960's and provided Black residents a place to enjoy the beach and famous musical acts during the era of Jim Crow segregation. This beach is an important piece of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County history, and we knew we had to preserve it.
