August 26, 2024 - Shortest Maryland covered bridge , at under 40 feet, is actually a replica . . . Still worth a visit.

Only 6 wooden covered bridges exist in Maryland , 3 in Frederick County. The original Roddy Road covered bridge is presumed to be built in 1856 or 1850 ? The bridge uses a single “ King Post” style truss system.

Repairs were made after 2 over-sized trucks damaged the Roddy Road bridge in 1992. Over the years steel beams replaced water damage truss beams underneath the bridge. Then grant money was awarded to replace the bridge in 2017 with a replica.

Maryland Parks & Recreation provided funds for a new parking area, picnic tables, pavilion, and playground equipment at Roddy Road. Great for families & friends to enjoy a beautiful & historic park !

Fun Facts

+1950 National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges formed

+Roddy Road Covered Bridge added to Register of Historic Places

+Maryland had over 100 covered bridges

+Only 6 Maryland covered bridges exist

+States with covered bridge preservation societies. . . NY, NH, VT, MD, KY, IN, OH, CT

Suggestion: Would suggest that Maryland place a large Plaque on covered bridge as a name ID in photos . Also weather proof information sheet, easy for visitors to read!...

We followed the sign from route 15 with said covered bridges, plural. We found this one and a small Park next to it. We were able to park at the county park. Even though there was a park ranger there, he seemed to go out of his way to avoid us. Which for many people might be ideal. Since there was nothing at the Park explaining the bridge or if there were others in the area the inside of a local person would have been helpful. Of course it's possible he was on some pressing mission. We turned around and went back to the highway the same way we had come. With the horrible air quality on a code red day I felt bad that the ranger had to be out of...

Great little park by bridge to take a stroll and have a picnic. Playground for younger children and a small creek to wet your feet in..🤗 Dog friendly but bring your own bags for picking up after your dog. Onsite restrooms (hard shelter port-a-potty) Onsite parking, pavilion and picnic tables. Beware that this is an active covered bridge; so there will be vehicles passing through the bridge. Would give 5 Stars... but was expecting restrooms to be cleaner. I don't personally hold this against the park because others need to respect their surroundings and common areas. Let's Keep America...
