Wow, what a precious historic gem in the heart of Massillon! We arrived, hoping to tour the home, not realizing it was "by scheduled appointment only" (the single reason I hesitantly gave 4 stars.) As luck would have it, Michael Winestock, Spring Hill Outreach and Education Coordinator was present in the office conducting research. He was gracious enough to accommodate us in what would become a very extended and personal tour of this fascinating location. In my many decades of taking historic tours, he ranked among the best! Mr. Winestock is a natural-born storyteller who presented his material with passion, clarity, and mastery of complex relationships and historical details. The home itself is astonishingly intact in architectural details, furnishings, and archival materials. Every room is beautifully and effectively "staged" to approximate the originals and delight the eye. There are numerous little "surprise" features of the home that Mr. Winestock wove into his narrative for maximum impact. As a site on the Underground Railroad, Rose Hill provides a rather unique look into the plight of fugitive slaves during that unhappy chapter of our nation's history. The grounds of the complex are also quite interesting with its various outbuildings. I know there are numerous expansions in the works for the interior and I would love to see those buildings opened in the future. I would add that we saw many wonderful opportunities for the engagement of children in the learing environment....

He had interesting anecdotes and cheerfully answered our many questions. The home itself had alot of items that were original and you could get up close to most of them for a good look. We were on the last tour of the day, but we were not rushed along and felt like Eric would have answered questions for alot longer. He clearly loves sharing this home's history.
