The road to Hana is full of tourist traps and I would not recommend it to anyone. The Lava Tube is a tourist trap unless you really are into geology and volcanology. As a everyday person looking for something cool to see and do, this is not it. It cost $12.50 each person to hike less than a half mile (.3) inside a completely dark cave with a flashlight. To put this into perspective you can see everything in less than 10 minutes of walking for $12.50. Their are many areas closed off to the public inside the cave/tube. The least they could have done was light the cave and extend the hike length to a couple miles however when you reach the end of the tour there is a sign that says “we don’t own the rest of the tube and to continue further is trespassing.”
For anyone interesting in doing the road to Hana I will say that it is one of the worst roads on the island. The road can quickly go from barely 2 lanes to barely 1 lane with no traffic mirrors to see oncoming traffic. If you decide to not turn around where it recommends, be prepared to take your car or rental through 7 miles of unpaved road. On the road, you can see a few great waterfalls including the Twin Falls for free, the land is well maintained, and makes for better photography and memories than the Lava Tube or the Botanical Gardens. The beaches are nice but no where near as good as some of the other islands. The red sand beach is not really red for most of the beach, Black Sand beach is very small and does not look as great as the Black Sand Beach on the Big Island. The waterfalls I would say is the bread and butter of the tour. You can get great shots but that’s about it.
To really enjoy yourself here find a beach to your liking and go to it. You will find various plants and volcano structures along the way and you can take great photos without incurring a cost. I am not sure why the local guides think this place is worth 5 stars though I can assume it is so they can take your money as their is not much else to do outside of beaches, snorkeling, and...
Read moreSo much fun!! Good for the whole family. My husband and I took our three year old and three month old and it was great. Initial stairs were the hardest part as they did descend a little more on the steep side but there is a hand rail to help. You can’t use a stroller due to the stairs so if you plan to bring little ones who can’t walk on their own I’d suggest a baby carrier so you can have your hands free to hold the flashlight and use the handrails found throughout most of the cave as the ground is uneven and rocky. Beyond the stairs it’s a fairly easy walk that doesn’t take too much energy. It took us about 45 minutes in total as we really took our time to look at everything and read the signs throughout the tube. If you’re concerned with it being a small space the tube is very tall and wide. I believe the guide at the beginning stated it was around 30’ tall and wide (or bigger). There was only one low spot you needed to duck under before going back into another big area but even if this concerns you there is still plenty of cave to explore before this point. Overall a great family experience that is fairly inexpensive compared to most other tours and activities...
Read moreGreat stop to stretch your legs after the long Road to Hana! Reasonably priced, self-guided tour through one of the largest lava tubes on the island. Vendors prefer cash on this side of the island, as internet service is sketchy and they may not be able to take plastic. Be sure to come prepared for your day drive to Hana and the lava tubes.
There is lots of clearance throughout the tunnel (30 ft ceilings most of the way), but there is one place where you will have to duck to get through to the rest of the tube. Nothing too bad, though! Certainly no knees need to touch the ground unless you want. Lots of signs along the path to explain what you're looking at. Only a half mile round trip down to the end of the tunnel and back, this is a very doable stop for anyone, including families.
The grounds above the lava tubes have a labrynth you can walk, and there is a small gift shop there as well. We had a great time at the...
