The real History of Silver Sands State Park (SSSP) is as follows! Originally SSSP was a dumping ground for the City of Milford! When the Silver Sands Homeowners Association was formed ,two of our priorities was to address flooding and to close down the entire dumping area! Toxic chemicals and other waste were found on the property . Leaching chemicals into Long Island Sound! After much lobbying By the SSHA Milford State Senator (R) Tom Scott, (R) Rep. T J Casey and (R) Rep. Gerald Patton procured @$2.7 million dollars to fund SSSP. This money was used to study the effects of the flooding and the damage to the environment. Diversified Technologies of North Haven did a very good study of the problems. The final result was a Flood Control report and the beginning stages of a State Park! (D) Rep. And Speaker of the House Emeritus James Amann was able to increase funding for the SSSP to almost $8 million dollars! Recently the Glory Hogs in Hartford held a press conference at the SSSP to Brag about the importance of the Park , but they didn’t include or mention the people who were involved with bringing this beautiful Park into fruition! If you look closely into the marsh areas, you will see debris from the old landfill surfacing. Please enjoy this beautiful place and remember the hard work and sacrifices that were made by residents of...
Read moreDecided to try something different after reading about the "warmest beach in New England."
First, I want to say this experience was filled with hope and gradually soured. We pulled up and were asked if we were out-of-state. Get a mirror or a camera. The girl at the kiosk was a total refusing to answer any questions including where to go (no clear signage), what were the payment methods (just held out her hand), or what amenities were available (ignored completely). I'd understand if it were busy but there was no one in front and no one behind the whole time.
Anyway, positives - gorgeous walkway to the beach (over a stinking marsh), new free-to-use facilities hut with restaurant (exorbitant prices), and well tended swimming area (insanely shallow even if it wasn't low tide which it was). Relatively inexpensive at $15 for out-of-state compared to MA where it's $40.
It was warmish.. water was probably 68-69 which New England in July isn't bad. Not overcrowded but busy enough for there to be din.
I'm glad I went but I won't go back. I hope someone trains the girl at the gate.
See you...
Read moreI haven't been to Silver Sands in quite a few years, so I was pleased with all the updates that have been made with the boardwalk. I have to say the parking for handicap accessibility is still a very small area.... which is a bummer. I wish the beach wasn't as covered in broken shells/rocks. That being said, it is a beach, it's kind of hard to avoid without the town having to rake it every single day. If you're looking for a beach that is all smooth sand, this isn't the beach for you. Other than the handicap parking and the shells/rocks being hard to walk on with bare feet, I had a great day with my sister and niece's. I'll definitely be going back soon. I would like to add that they do have lifeguard on duty and that they are very strict about bringing any of those wave boards or even balls into the water. It's to keep the public safe so I understand but figured I'd give anyone a heads-up so you're not lugging something to the beach you and or the kids can't even play with if it's your intention to play with it in the water. Also, I did see signs posted that dogs aren't permitted to go...
