I have explored historic Catholic Churches in other parts of the United States, and while all of them are beautiful in one way or another, none of them match the unparalleled size and detailed architecture of the Basilica of St. Josaphat. Standing 250 ft tall at the tip of the dome, this gargantuan structure is not only the tallest church in Milwaukee but it’s also one of Wisconsin’s tallest churches. Far more impressive than its height and imposing exterior is its interior architecture. The interior of the main sanctuary is ornately decorated with gold, bronze, marble, and other materials in such a way that will leave all visitors awestruck upon entering, and an innumerable amount of sculptures, paintings, statues, and other forms of artwork can be seen everywhere one looks. So much effort was devoted to making this church a masterpiece of engineering and architecture that no image or photo can convey how truly magnificent this religious sanctuary is. Only in an in person visit can one truly appreciate the grandeur of this historic basilica.
While visiting a little museum embedded in this marvel of a historic structure, I was intrigued to learn that this cathedral was built from salvaged materials from the old Chicago post office and Customs house. Hundreds of thousands of tons of stone and other materials from the post office were shipped from Chicago to Milwaukee by way of 500 rail cars. During the construction, the materials were assembled so that the basilica possessed an appearance that was drastically different from the old post office.
The Basilica of St. Josaphat is another highly recommended must-see tourist attraction in Milwaukee. If possible I would recommend spending about an hour or more to really appreciate the artistic and architectural details of the main worship sanctuary. There is so much to see in just one room that, as mentioned before, an in-person visit is the best way to observe the interior of this masterpiece of...
