The course is great. It's a very unique and challenging design. The three stars is due to the service I received from the gentleman working in the pro shop. I was in the market for a super stroke putter grip. I asked the gentleman if I purchased a grip, would he be able to install it before we left for our round in an hour. The gentleman stated he was busy with scoring for a tournament but once he had some help he would be able to install it. An hour later, prior to starting our round my putter had not been touched. I told them no big deal, I would check back after our first nine holes. After playing nine holes and grabbing lunch, my putter was still sitting there untouched. I asked the nice gal at the desk if they were going to get to it before I finished the back nine. She explained he was busy but that she would remind him. After we finished I was handed my putter. The grip was not installed. The younger guy working told me the gentleman who could install it had left for the day. I left my putter with the gentleman at 11:30am, we finished at 5:30pm. I wouldn't have purchased the grip had I known they would not have time to install it. It was an overall poor experience, not what I would expect from a top...
Read moreCourse is fantastic. It was in great shape and the black sand is amazing. We had a guys trip with 4 foursomes and played 36 holes (18 holes twice) and the variety of hole design is great.
There are elevation changes throughout the layout, but nothing too gimmicky. I wouldn’t say the course plays like a links style course but it has a style similar to one depending on the weather conditions. Tee shots are pretty forgiving while second shorts demanded more accuracy. Greens rolled good and took some adjustment figuring out the severity of the break.
We started early and then playing through warm weather with wind and then back to calm weather. There are couple holes with blind tee shots, but just enough to make it enjoyable. The par threes have great views, but all similar in length. There are some longer par 5s as well which are fun.
Clubhouse seemed well stocked with course branded gear. Only issue is in my mind the golden bear Logo isn’t attractive.
The snack cart circled around a couple times during play and prices aren’t too outrageous.
We plan on making this an...
Read moreWhat an incredible course...and experience! Played this course on Wednesday September 14 along my route to Ohio...my 191st course in a little over 3 years. The setting is so unique...a Superfund site made stunningly beautiful. The contrast of the immaculate greens and fairways with the black slag bunkers and waste areas...embraced by the surrounding hills make this course an amazing visual treat to play! Great layout with very large landing areas for your drive, with accuracy required closer to the green - the Nicklaus signature design. So much fun to play! Carts were very clean and well cared for. Beautiful clubhouse with interesting interpretive panels detail the unique construction of the course. Orderly, well-stocked pro shop. The recently remodeled Jack's restaurant/bar is very clean and beautifully done, and the food (I ordered a Club) is delicious! The staff at Old Works is awesome. The course pro Andrew was very personable, kind and accommodating, as was Paeton in the restaurant. I'll...
