There are several "Depot Museums" within easy driving distance. Monterey has the best by far. Lots of local and regional history and a few times per year there are excursion trains. There is a nice little HO scale model showing the depot, downtown and local "color". Check out the bookshelf, the quilts and the coal related items and militaria while you're there. The staff are helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. Oh - and be sure to get some of the coal soap. ...

I thought I stopped in here many years ago on a road trip to the Smokies when I just needed a break from driving. I took the picture I'm going to attach of a fascinating hand-drawn map with many, many notes written about the mills and mines and families in the area. At the bottom, the plaque reads, "Wilder Area Mines". I'd appreciate if anybody could comment about whether I photographed it at this museum or somewhere else nearby. In any case...

I was looking for a place to take a break along I-40, you know, one that's easy on, easy off. Well, believe me, even if it WASN'T easy to get to, it WOULD BE WORTH IT 🥇 I was amazed by what I found there! A fun and interesting museum! I had the opportunity to visit and tour with a group of friends on our monthly outing and i really enjoyed it! The museum is nicely put together and it not only talks about railroad history, but it also houses artifacts and local history displays. The staff even took the time to give us a personal tour and share some ghost stories with us.

An interesting collection of railroad related artifacts and stories in a rebuilt depot. The stories are mostly told by the host as he gives you a tour. The collection and displays show how vital the railroad was to the town getting established.
