Pyramid mountain has some great views and a destination photo opportunity at Tripod . Tripod rock is a 280,000 lb rock on top of three smaller rocks. (How did they weigh that? My scale only goes up to to 300 lbs) This was our second journey here going back to get our photo up for the scavenger hunt we were on . this time the parking lot was filled up and we had a park several blocks away on the side street across the road. you would think it would make it easier with more people there to follow however we found people going in so many different directions we lost track of our route easily. funny thing is the first time we made it with no problem following nobody. That's said, pay attention to the trail markers. Along the way there are several viewpoints we can see out over the forest, although on the day we went it was so busy it was hard to get a picture at any of them. Once at Tripod Rock it was a great time as everyone was happy to finally made their destination. Here there's quite a few places to sit and if you were smart enough to bring food or water you can eat or drink here. Just remember to carry out all your garbage as we did. On that note too I must say that the trail was amazingly clean seeing almost zero garbage! in fact the only garbage I saw look like pieces that we're accidentally dropped. If you continue past Tripod Rock there is a rock called Whale's Head Rock, however we did not go that far this time as it was almost 6:00. 🐋 Whale's Head Rock does seem to be closer to some public roads so you might be able to walk in from a different angle and it would be a much shorter trip. There is a porta potty at the beginning of the trail. I recommend using it and there is a information building but they're not always open. Check the hours. All in all, it's a great trail to hike it can be quite a journey and some of the trails are much harder...
Read moreThe area features unusual glacial erratics, dramatic rock outcrops, extensive wetlands, waterfalls, and several scenic overlooks – including views of the Manhattan skyline. How about Tripod Rock, a 160-ton boulder resting atop three smaller boulders? between how it's resting on three small rocks. *thinking *. let me google, ok found it. Roughly 18,000 years ago, the receding Wisconsin Glacier shaped the unusual glacial erratics found here, like Tripod Rock (a 180-ton boulder balanced on three smaller boulders) and Bear Rock (one of the largest in New Jersey, and I have also attached a pic)
The trail system here is good for beginning hikers but interesting enough for experienced ones. To create longer loops, connect the trails with Turkey Mountain, the two trailheads are across the street from the parking lot. The park’s highest point is 934 feet, with a magnificent view of the New York City skyline. This hike is for all people, with all levels of fitness. The route includes some moderate elevation gain with huge rock outcroppings. You'll need the trail map for this hike, especially if it is your first time visiting the park. Start at the trail kiosk (where there are typically free trail maps) and follow the Mennen Trail (Blue) over the footbridge. My suggestion would be - stick to the trail which you...
Read moreGreat little hiking area! The parking lot is big and they even have a visitor center. The trails that are right next to the parking lot are relatively flat with gravel and you could even push a stroller or possibly a wheelchair with the right tires. Then there is a bridge that is more intense and sturdy than any hiking bridge needs to be, but on the other side of the bridge there is a lot more hiking in the mountain and stuff. There used to be a trail that would go straight up the mountain to get to the good views more quickly, but now you have to either go left or right and both of them are slow, gradual trails that get you to the top. They have a bunch of signs up showing you where to go so you take the new trail instead of the old one. Most of the trails are pretty well marked and there are only a few of them anyway. You can see all the way out to New York City which is always fun and if you hike North from pyramid mountain you can see tripod Rock which is also...
