Beach (City Beach)

Sands & shoreline: A sweeping 2.5 miles of soft, golden sand right on Lake Michigan. Clean, certified, and wide enough for everyone to find space.

Facilities & features: Playground, volleyball courts, scenic walking trails, easy access to two historic lighthouses and the “USS Silversides” submarine, plus the lively “The Deck” BBQ bar/restaurant with live music.

Crowd & atmosphere: Family‑friendly yet vibrant—popular without feeling claustrophobic. One reviewer on Tripadvisor says it’s “very safe and not too crowded as it is more family‑oriented”.

Sunsets & scenes: Faces west—it’s known for those epic Lake Michigan sunsets.

👍 Highlights: Clean sand, amenities, culture, sunsets. 👎 Drawbacks: Can get busy on weekends; less ideal if you want solitude.

🏕️ Muskegon State Park Beach

Expansive dunes & shoreline: Combines nearly 2 miles on Lake Michigan and 1 mile on Muskegon Lake, framed by sweeping dunes and trails .

Natural ambiance: A quieter, more rugged beach experience. Users say it’s “quiet beach, nice and natural with dunes and grasses—no fudge shops here”.

Camping-friendly: Adjacent to dual campgrounds and trail systems. One camper praised the proximity of parking and tailgating culture.

Sport & adventure: Offers hiking, fishing piers, paddle sports on the lake, and even a winter sports complex. Excellent for families and outdoor enthusiasts.

Considerations: Campsites can be tight and buggy for tent campers; cabins and RVs fare better . Some campers complain it’s crowded in summer.

👍 Highlights: Natural beauty, multi‑use park, camping, state‑run amenities. 👎 Drawbacks: Crowded campgrounds, limited privacy, occasional bugs in bathhouses.

🐕 Kruse Park (Dog Beach)

Pet paradise: The go‑to dog beach—no time restrictions. A friendly, off‑leash haven for pups and people alike .

Access: Open sandy beach with parking, restrooms, and picnic shelters.

👍 Highlights: Fantastic for dog owners, spacious vibe. 👎 Drawbacks: Not ideal if you prefer no pets at the beach.

🌿 Duck Lake State Park

Wilder atmosphere: Smaller beach north of Muskegon with a calmer feel. Reddit users praise it for "warmer Duck Lake water" and serene stretches .

Easy escape: Great for those who want quiet and a walkable escape from busy shoreline crowds.

👍 Highlights: Tranquil, fewer crowds. 👎 Drawbacks: Minimal facilities; more rustic than urban beaches.

📝 Community & Local Flavor

Muskegon is trending as a premier beach-and-culture town—vibrant arts, breweries, and events mix with lakeside leisure .

Additional Muskegon County beaches include Lake Harbor Park, Meinert, Moore, Pioneer Parks, etc., offering everything from camping to fishing and nature trails.

🔍 Reddit Voices

“Second Duck Lake! The bonus is the (sometimes) warmer Duck Lake water and ever changing channel. Adequate parking without a sticker.” “Muskegon State Park is wonderful! Lots of variety of beach scenes to choose from.”

Cleanest Beach in the state!!! Well groomed, no garbage, no sticks, nothing. What a view!! Parking could be better. It's too bad they don't improve it with all the parking $ they are taking in. That plan they had two years ago must have been tossed. That center section of dune would be a fantastic parking addition and I would say that area could hold at least another 150-250 parking spots. I've never seen it used and it's dead space. What a revenue increase and a decrease in congestion for parking. Let's face it....it's over needed with all the increased business traffic...

We love this beach! It is our favorite beach. Separated into one side that allows dogs, and one that does not. Never very crowded and very beautiful. There is short walk down a boardwalk to get to the beach. Steps involved, but also wheelchair accessibile. On the drive in if you take the road to the right, there is a nice park for the kids and great facilities for a cookout, etc. There is also a voardwalk that traverses the dunes that has amazing views of the beach and...

Huge beach area. Parking is right off the road directly in front of the beach, and there is also a parking lot further down where the portable bathrooms, volley ball courts, kite sailing rentals, etc. are located. Be prepared to walk in fairly soft sand to get close to the water, but definitely worth it. The only downfall is the location of the portable bathrooms from this part of the beach, which is quite a ways away. Very clean and lots of room to roam.

There are so many options for nice beaches along the west Michigan coast but the Muskegon beach has to one of the best. Not only does it not as crowded as some others (like St. Joseph) but the shoreline is really wide and the sand is clean and soft. You can easily find a quiet spot even on busy summer weekends. The water is shallow quite a long ways in, so kids can easily play in the water. Thankfully, the beach is also pet free.
