We rode trail horses at Lynch’s Woods Trails 8 August 2018. The Lynch Woods Trail map list it as: "Palmetto Trail/Hiking/Equestrian (3 miles) Equestrian Trail (6 miles)". That is 6 miles total, with 3 of the 6 signed as “Palmetto Trail”. These three miles are part of the 42 miles total available to trail riders on the Palmetto Trail across the State. That is disappointing with so many horses and trail riders that the Palmetto Trail system is not inclusive.
Finding the start of the trail was difficult. The sign showing the way to the trail had been run over. The rusty damage to the sign post appeared to indicate the sign had been done quite a while.
Six miles is not a lot of trail for a horse, but the forest we rode was very pretty. Particularly the 2 miles we rode that were accidently outside the park following the Rocky Branch Creek. The horse trail is not well marked. There are signs, but the layout of the signs often leaves on guessing, hence the 2-mile accidental, but very pretty trail off along the creek.
At one sign post intersection we had to cut a downed tree to get through, only to find the trail was mis-marked, and was going back to where the trail was not marked, and apparently not open. The park is very pretty, and with the help of someone trained in route markings could be greatly improved. We found the trails interesting, and an easy ride. We probably missed 1-2 miles of trail and rode gravel road due to the poor signing. Signing does generally separate horse trails from bike trails. There are a lot of trails, making staying on the correct trail difficult. Our drive from the Upstate was a roundtrip of almost 3 hours, while the ride, even with the venture out of the park just 2 ½ hours at...
Read moreAwesome patch of woods near Newberry. Great for hiking and biking (if you’re into that). I’ve had complaints about how convoluted the trails system can be, but they keep them very well maintained and honestly the area is such that even if you get lost you can usually find your way back to the road and back to parking. The road loop is a solid 4+ miles that makes for a good daily walk, and you’ll still get to see the best sites. Uplands and lowlands and fields in between, with massive untouched trees and generally well-maintained yet untouched forest. The place is rarely busy but still well-used. You’ll probably see a handful of people while you’re out there, but all nice and friendly. Great spot during the fall because you don’t have to worry about hunters as much as every other patch of land in the state. Definitely...
Read moreNewberry - the jewel small town in South Carolina and finding this nature area made the area that much more desirable. Hours are limited right now due to construction, but fortunately arrived when work wasn't being done. Plentiful amount of space for walking, biking or running. Trails are extremely well-maintained and wide. Abundance of beautiful pine trees, some calm flowing creeks and the greenery is breathtaking. Plenty of shade for hot days for those sensitive to the sun. Great place to enjoy nature and enhance your...
