First off, this is a gorgeous area. Second, this is not an elderly-, young child-, disabled-, or clumsy-friendly beach. When you come here, be prepared to pay for parking. On busy days, the park closes down parking closer to the base of the hill, where you enter the beach, and you will have a long walk ahead of you. The hike down from parking to this beach area is long and downhill. The hike back uphill feels even longer. Once you get the bottom of the drive, there’s a long multi-tiered wooden stairs pathway that leads to the top of the beach. This is a wide stairway, but it is often slippery. There is no ramp. This is a long staircase so remember that you have to climb back up. The Yaquina Lighthouse overlooks this area so, naturally, most people do both activities. The lighthouse museum is worth the minutes. The lighthouse tour is also enjoyable. The beach, itself, is gorgeously unique. There isn’t “sand”. It’s cobbles. At the top of the beach, the cobbles are larger. For-warning: this beach is angled down. Now, if you’ve never been here, imagine a downhill slope covered in marbles. Now walk down it. That’s how you will look when you visit this beach. It’s worth it, though. You can climb/slide/fall your way out to beautiful tide-pools and a pretty view. Overall, a fun pit stop for...
Read moreLots of stairs, but nicely built, with rest areas at every landing. This is the Yaquina Head Lighthouse visitor's area. There is a fee to drive your car in, and I believe it's still under $10 for a carload. Walking in is free, but the only parking is down below Izzy's Restaurant. The cobblestone beach makes a wonderful sound as the ancient rocks roll around in the surf! How long has it taken for these rocks to be worn round?! Not safely accessible when it's high tide, but still enjoyable from the top. A wheelchair access is a steep gated road, but you can call from a intercom to have the gate opened, and then a car can be driven down to a small open access. The waves crash hard against the basalt lava, definitely bring...
Read moreVery interesting and unique with great views for picture taking. As the name implies, instead of sand, the beach is of dark/black stones & pebbles. All same material just that some areas rocks have more broken down more. This is what makes it unique since the beaches all around are sandy.
The rangers are friendly & very informative. For those in wheelchair or mobility restrictions, there is a deck at the top from which you can enjoy the view of the ocean. To get down, there are many stairs and the beach itself is a bit angled, but going both down & back up...
