Β Β Β Read moreI love railroads and decided to check out the Southeastern Narrow Gauge & Shortline Museum in Newton, NC. The museum is inside the former Newton Depot. Admission is free, but donations are accepted. The museum is just open on Fridays and Saturdays.
A narrow gauge railway is typically used in mountainous terrain and less populated communities as they are cheaper to build. They were used for mining, logging, quarrying, and moving agricultural products.
Inside the museum, you will see all of the artifacts, and there are a lot of them. So much history in a small place.

The Depot was full of great exhibits showing local and regional railroad history. The restored engine and cars were marvelous. A caboose was in mid restoration showing how much has to be done to make them shine. The aspiring model railroader in me found much inspiration. Canβt wait to bring the rest of the family, especially my grandson. The gift shop had a much greater selection than I had anticipated and very very reasonable. I highly recommend this for...
