It's a museum of museums. That's because this place is loaded with plaster casts of other famous works of art, all crammed into a relatively compact area. Why travel the world to see all of these sculptures when you have them all in one spot. While there are so many statues that surround you, it doesn't feel overly full. Perhaps the balcony gives the added airiness that makes this place feel special. Because many (if not all) of the sculpture works are copies, you can get as close as you'd like to the art. They're all life size or larger, so it's quite an experience to immerse yourself among so many masters' masterpieces. You can also learn about the history of the Slater family, and their Grand Tour journey on their private yacht. There are also works and artifacts representing the history of Norwich, CT, as well as some of the Slater Family's finds from various countries on their world tour. There's even an explanation on how the plaster casts were made. A spacious gallery area is available at the rear of the museum, which hosts annual events and various art shows. Parking can be a little sparse on busy days if you want to park right nearby, but parking exists on a side street if the small lot up front is full. Definitely worth a visit when you're in the area if you want a lot of...
Read moreI'm biased because of my legacy. My grandfather taught at the high school for 35 years and ate his lunch at the top of Slater tower everyday. My mother is a docent at the Museum with what seems like a group of other talented retired teachers from the area whom all love art and history.
All biases aside, I do frequent a lot of small museums (with and without Mom) and this one has always been impressive with the greco-roman cast collection. In recent years, there have been quite a lot of upgrades and changes so if you went to school here decades ago, it is worth another look!
If I were to offer feedback to the exhibit designers, I do think that moving the Pieta (Michelangelo) to a corner was the wrong move. That piece had so much weight and meaning where it was before. The keystone former location is now occupied by lots and lots of text, kiosks, and no actual art. It feels like a wasted opportunity to anchor the second...
Read moreA friend of mine came down to visit and we had planned on seeing the Ct Artists show. We arrived early Sunday afternoon to find the doors closed! We were both shocked! - Why would a museum be closed on a Sunday? the most perfect time to visit. I've been to the museum recently for a lecture and was early so I took a quick tour. I was also shocked and dismayed then to see that many of the beautiful displays had been removed - and well to say it plainly - it looked like I was in a warehouse store. The previous director had brought the Slater up quite a few levels with better lighting, artful displays - and now the new director has not only eliminated most of her good work but brought the entire quality level down. It wasn't that long ago when Slater was a asset counter to Norwich's general malaise - now...
