There are a lot of pine trees, incredibly beautiful, definitely worth a visit. The slope is relatively gentle, and you can enjoy the scenery along the way without having to reach the mountaintop. It exceeded expectations, and occasionally, there are some beautiful red shrubs as well. Early October is the peak season for pine trees. On the way up, we hiked half of the Cutthroat Pass via the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail). According to AllTrails, it's 10 miles round trip with an elevation gain of 2,024 feet. On the way down, we hiked half of Cutthroat Lake and Cutthroat Pass. According to AllTrails, it's 11.4 miles round trip with an elevation gain of 2,473 feet. We hiked a total of 11.4 miles in 6 hours. The trail going up had a lot of pine trees and, of course, plenty of people. I wouldn't recommend the trail going down as it lacks much scenery, has more rocks on the path, fewer hikers, but quite a few cyclists. So, going back and forth on the PCT trail is a better choice.

We started our hike at 9:30 on a beautiful, cloud free Tuesday morning. The hike starts out very gradual and stays like that for the first couple miles. The hike starts to get some incline but nothing too crazy. The fall colors were amazing and give it about another week or two and the larches will be out in full effect. If you’re wanting to get some amazing views but don’t want to deal with the Maple Pass crowds then this is the hike to do. The trail was very peaceful. Once we got to the top of the Pass we took the PCT for another mile and a half and the views opened up some more. This hike is just going to continue to keep getting prettier. We saw about 10 horses at the pass so that made coming down fun having to dodge all the piles of horse poop. Overall, beautiful day. Round trip 13.5 miles and 2,400 feet elevation gain.

Cutthroat Pass is an 11-mile round-trip hike with about 2,000 ft of elevation gain. We went when the first snow hit the ground — peaceful, quiet, and almost empty. Ended up snowshoeing part of the way, which made it feel like a true winter adventure. Some sections could become avalanche-prone later in the season, so I’d suggest saving this one for summer if you want clear trails and big alpine views. We were happy to see patches under the snow!
